Questions - Offline Processing - TAFs

Featured Replies

I'm trying to figure out how to configure offline weather. I've been doing it, but I'm not sure I'm doing it properly. This doesn't make sense to me, because when loading a FP, the NavLog produces (displays) your weather. If online updates are off, then how would it know what weather to load, and if you download the archive file first before loading a FP, then it surely doesn't contain weather for the whole world, right?? What are the steps to ensure the weather is accurate for that time and locale? Also, do I need to download consecutive hours, and if so, is the format how many hours or a zulu time? In regards to TAFs, why should they be disabled by default? Do they just provide too many possible conflicts for FS9? Should they be used for offline or what?I also have trouble understanding the Enable Offline Sequence Playback option. Is this just for when the consecutive hours box is used? Thanks!

Hi Chris,I'll give this a shot before going to bed:1. The download is for the entire world so no problems there.2. If you are going to use a FP then download and load the first weather file. Then plan the flight.3. How many future hours you think you will need.4. If you are setting the FS time to the weather time then TAFs can be Off.5. Yes, it tells ASv6 to use the next set of data.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.comhttp://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6...development.jpg http://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6-banner-proud.jpg

Hi,Just to add on #4, TAFs are helpful to make the weather dynamic when certain "stale" conditions exist, either online or offline. If you were using an offline single file, for example, and flew for 3 hours, you could either have the weather stay the same for all stations, or have it change via forecast by enabling TAF processing. If using online or offline sequential playback, TAF processing will rarely have any effect (depends on how up to date the station is/was reporting at this/that time).if using TAF processing, you need to be aware of your time used in AS. With default options, using offline sequential mode, this will be handled for you via auto FS time set. If using any other modes, make sure the time in use (either system or FS, via "Use System Time" option) is set to the same time of the weather data in use. Otherwise the TAF engine will get confused.Best,

And since my system time would be much different, then I'd need to uncheck Use System Time as well?I understand real-time use perfectly. The problem is, most of my time at home for the sim is at night, so I try and just pick a time earlier in the day, which I set in ASv6 and FS9 to match. Of course my system time would be several hours ahead. Also, provided my settings are correct for offline wx, does it matter if I leave my time-zone conversion set to -7 (AZ) even if I'm flying outside this UTC conversion? Say, KLAX to KSEA? This assuming my FS9 and ASv6 time are correct for the area being flown? (CA to WA)

I didn't realize that.2. Understood.3. So if the flight is 2 hours from 1600Z, then I'd enter 2, not 1800Z?4. Should be off with FS time, but not necessarily with system time?5. Understood. Thanks!

Let me try to take it step by step for you...1. Figure out the flight you are going to take from A to B. Have a FS flightplan ready if you want to use the FP features in AS.2. Determine the time and date you want to depart(in the past), and how long the flight is going to be.3. Download weather calculating zulu time/date. "Additional Consecutive Hours to Download" is where you put in the number of hours after start that you will need for the flight.4. Disable "Use System Time (vs FS Time)". This will make AS use your time in FS and not your system time. (See note 1)5. Enable "Offline Sequence Playback". This makes AS pick the next archived weather automatically when you reach the the next hour. If its missing AS will let you know. If its disabled you will be stuck with the first archive you loaded.6. Make sure the loaded weather is for the hour of your departure. Process flightplan in AS if you wish at this time.7. Start FS and set your departure airport and aircraft. Once that is done set the time so that it matches the time youre supposed to depart(Set it to top of the hour is best if you need a long preflight). Important or #4 will make AS read wrong FS time, and weather will be wrong.8. Start the flight and enjoy the weather :)Notes....1. Using FS time is most useful when in Offline mode. Using it in Online mode along with "TAF processing" will get you weather based on TAF and FS time. If TAF is off you will get current weather regardless of what time you have in FS.2. "TAF Processing"... If in Online mode with system time, it will be used to calculate weather should the station not have a valid metar for a couple of hours. This is also true when using archived weather in sequence and FS time matching those. Like the guide above. If used with just one weather file, in offline mode, it will give you changing weather for 24 hours based on TAF reports available.Should any of this be incorrect then Im sure Jim or Damian will correct me.Hope it made sense ;)JT
