Another way to use ASv6.5 with both FS9 & FSX

Featured Replies

First, I want to appologize to Jim and Damian up front for publicizing my particular method of using ASv6.5 with both FS9 & FSX as this may cause support problems. It is not intentional but, I think it's an easier method of dealing with external programs to simultaniously support both FS9 and FSX. I thought it worth mentioning. Please note, I use a WideFS setup for both FS9 and FSX and this is written to exactly that extent. I run AS, Radar Contact, FS Real Time, and FS Flight Keeper, among others, on the WideClient (remote) PC. I have no knowledge of how ASv6(.5) is installed directly on a FlightSim PC so this may not work in this case. Not only is what I'm about to say work with AS, but FSBuild2, future versions of Radar contact, FS Real Time, etc. The basic premis is to just copy (duplicate) the entire directory of each supporting program and rename it. For instance, my ~Program FilesActiveSky is now setup to support FSX. The duplicate copy, ~Program FilesActiveSky_FS9 is setup to run against FS9.This allows settings such as paths and options to remain in-tact for each copy/version without the fumbling of .ini files, options, and so forth, prior to starting each occurance. I personnaly leave the "officially installed" (exists in Windows - Add Remove Programs) version of a program to run with FSX, I use the copy/duplicate directory of each program to support FS9. I then just created another shortcut on the destop pointing to this new copy/version to start it. For example, in my case,I just added a second shortcut pointing to ~Program FilesActiveSky_FS9ModulesASV6asv6.exe. Guess what, all the ini parameters and options are now set and retained in this copy for use with FS9.Now I have two AS icons on my desktop, one called "ASv6 (FS9)" and another "ASv6 (FSX)". I also have two icons for each version of Radar Contact and FS Real Time as well. To duplicate the entire AS directory, it will require an additional ~400Mb of drive space. Radar Contact 4.3 (when publicaly available) will require another 1.2Gb of drive space. If you're like me and your WideClient does nothing but support FS, then you might have enough additional drive-space to easily accomplish this. So, what do I have on my WideClient PCProgram FilesAcitveSky_FS9 (duplicate) -> WideServerFS9Program FielsActiveSky (original) -> WideServerFSXProgram Filesrcv4.2 (duplicate) -> WideServerFS9Program Filesrcv4 (original) -> WideServerFSXProgram FilesWideClientWideClient.exe (only one) -> FS9 and FSXProgram FilesFSBuild2_FS9 (duplicate) -> WideServerFS9Program FilesFSBuild2 (Original) -> WideServerFSXProgram FilesFS Real Time_FS9 (duplicate) -> WideServerFS9Program FielsFS Real Time (Original) -> WideServerFSXProgram FilesFS Commander_FS9 (duplicate) -> WideServerFS9Program FilesFS Commander (Original) -> WideServerFSXRemember, you will have to go into each copy of each program and set the relevent options to work with either FS9 or FSX. But once set, it should be set for good. Then all you have to do is double-click on the FS9 or FSX version of the desktop-icon for each program and you should be rockin'.Good luck.

Has anyone tried this method with ASv6(.5) installed directly on the FS PC, without WideFS?

I have one user who wrote he has a simple home network and does not use WideFS. Hi Al, before doing nothing i want to ask you .Ive two disk, one installed c:Fs9, another installed f:fsX-The ASV6 is installed in c:archivos de programafs9Then my question is if i can install ASV6 in f: . ? That means ill have two ASV6 installed, one in C:, another in F:or better is to do your copy system of the directory c: where the ASV6 is installed to f: ? And so ill have only one ASV6 installed in c:Tks in advance

I don't think AS will install itself (using the official Windowd installation method) twice on the same PC, although I've never personally tried. As I mentioned above, next to "Please Note," I don't run AS on the FS PC, never have, only on a remote/WideFS PC.As I vaguely understand it, you now have the option with ASv6.5 to officially install it anywhere on the FS PC whereas in earlier versions it was always installed in FS9ModulesASv6. I guess if this "install anywhere" option is now true, I would uninstall AS, then reinstall it to it's own directory, out from underneath FS9.I would probably chose a new install-path more closely related to FSX since this is the version of the long-term future. Say, F:Active Sky. then setup this officially installed F:Active Sky to work with FSX and all the AS options as well.Once everything is working with AS and FSX on the F: drive, flat-copy (drag) the entire "Active Sky" directory from the F: drive to the C: drive, creating a new C:Active Sky directory. Rename the offical ASv6 shortcut on the desktop to "ASv6 (FSX)". Manually create a new "ASv6 (FS9)" desktop-shortcut pointing to C:Active SkyModulesASv6ASv6.exe (I'm guessing at this path). At this point edit the C:Active SkyModuelsASv6ASv6.ini file and change the "FS9Path = F:FSX" line to "FS9Path = C:FS9" then save and close the ini file. Start FS9 and "ASv6 (FS9)" and setup the AS options known to work with FS9.Because I don't know the exact paths and correct installation of ASv6(.5) when installed directly on the FS PC, you might want to wait for Jim or Damien to chime-in here to correct me where I might have lead you astray before you even uninstall AS from FS9.

Tks, Al, and ill try tomorrow the first. It is a great response, i think its possible to run.And of course ill wait for Jim or Damien opinion's...

Hi,You'll be better off just having one installation. ASv6.5 will recognize the version of FS you are running and you will be good!Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Jim,I guess I'm to have to ask that this thread be taken down as it (duplicating the ASv6 folder) doesn't seem to be working with ASv6.5, like I thought. I just realized that the asv6.ini file in the duplicate folder is not being read or changed when running asv6.exe out of the duplicate folder. Appereantly (my best guess), asv6.exe is hard-set to the path used in the registry, (HKLMSoftwareHiFiASv6 Install_PATH). When I make changes to the Options, only the asv6.ini file in the original asv6 folder is updated. This method works with the other programs listed above but not with AS (I swore it did the other day, but now I can't make it work). Unless there's a way to force another path to be used by ASv6, set as a switch in the shortcut, or better yet, force an alternate .ini file, this duplicating the whole AS directory is pointless. The whole point here was to not have to edit all the options every-time we switch between FS9 and FSX, or move around pre-saved copies of the asv6.ini file.Oh well, back to the drawing borad :(UPDATE: Confirmed, the asv6.exe binary is reading the path from the registry. If I change the path set in "Install_PATH" in the registry to the duplicat folder, then the duplicate .ini file is updated. No use, really...

Hi Al,A bit confused here.. why would you need to specify different paths at all? Once the station database is updated there is nothing sent to FS at all (either version) from AS6.5. SO ideally you could just have ASv6.5 update FS9 once (most likely done long ago) on startup, exit out, change to FSX folders, then let ASv6.5 update that one. Now everything is updating and nothing will change regardless of which sim version you are running.. everything goes through FSUIPC.Basically, those paths are used only for the initial database update which only happens once.Best,

No Damian,This isn't about the weathlist.bin file, but having to set options one-way for use against FS9, then unset options to use against FSX. GEPro, ASG, throttling, haze-layer, etc... See where I'm going?

"I think the correct is saying :"you may wish to point the ASv6.ini FS9 folder entry to your FSX path instead of FS9"

Hi,Thanks for catching the error in the document!I am not real sure what you mean. If FSUIPC4 is installed correctly into FSX and you are running FSX, then it doesn't matter where the programs are located on your computer. In FSX, on the menu bar, do you have an Add Ons menu and is FSUIPC one of the entries? The unregistered version of FSUIPC will work fine also. Please let us know, Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Hi,Glad things are working!Active Radar is not compatible with FSX so please do not try to do anything with that.Thansk,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

FYI, I tested a little somethin' somethin' for Damian yesterday that completely solves the point of this thread in regard to ASv6. I won't steal his thunder but it definitly works and is very easy to implement. Stand-by...:-beerchugHappy Halloween!
