September 3, 200421 yr Just changed from an ATI 9800 Pro 128 to the NVidia GT256. My "Water" in FS9 doesn't have the same realism or movement as it had with the ATI card. My water effects are up all the way. This is water that was enhanced by Bill Lyons and others. I loved the look when I had the ATI. Is there a way to bring back the animation and the look with the NVidia card?
September 4, 200421 yr The reason I picked X800 Pro over 6800 GT was exactly water. I had nothing else to go by than the review on hardocp.com and one (compare) look at the water reflection pic convinced me to go with ATI.Michael J. Michael J.
September 4, 200421 yr my water looks fine on my 6800. do you mean that you're not getting reflections and "waving" animated textures?>The reason I picked X800 Pro over 6800 GT was exactly water.>I had nothing else to go by than the review on hardocp.com and>one (compare) look at the water reflection pic convinced me to>go with ATI.>>Michael J.>those pictures of water on hardocp are really not comparable, because the water is constantly waving in and out (even while the sim is paused), remember? I imagine the difference in the pictures is due to the reviewer taking the screen shots at slightly different parts of the waving in and out, not the capabilities with the cards.but the x800 i think is pretty comparable to the nvidia so no harm...

Or have you solved the blurriness problem by adjusting the FS9.cfg as advised in the other thread you have running at the moment. And installing up-to-date drivers? And removing the old ATI driver remnants?Allcott
September 4, 200421 yr I agree, the water does look different under the 6800. I'll be interested to see how it looks when I install my X800.. Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers
September 5, 200421 yr Author Allcott, I appreciate your reponse. I downloaded DriverCleaner, and I'm just not sure I want to run THAT program. Sp, I "chickened out" and didn't. I did uninstall ATI drivers, and used Add/Remove Programs to uninstall NVidia. Blurries seem better now, and by using the "MoreWater" file in the library, I have a pretty good rendition of flowing water now.I still get about 4 flashers when FS9 is loading, but not during the sim. I am using the latest drivers.I've changed my bandwidth with I think has helped a lot. Today I downloaded ServicePak 2 from Microsoft, and haven't had a chance to try FS9 yet. Thanks for your constructive advice.
September 5, 200421 yr I GUARANTEE you haven't removed all traces of the previous drivers. Create a System Restore point, then run Driver Cleaner. It will find dozens - maybe hundreds - of file remnants, any or all of which could be affecting your gaming experience. DO NOT install SP2 without running driver cleaner, or else the SP2 installer will back up those same remnants into .cab folders, just waiting for the day they can jump out and bite you in the butt.Afterward you can install the Service Pack, then chipset drivers, then the chosen video drivers. The latest do cause flashing when the menu screens boot. That appears to be normal.Allcott
September 5, 200421 yr Allcott... you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.Cheers,Greg
September 5, 200421 yr Author Thanks for the "horse" reference. Since I have the "normal flashing", I'll assume all is as it should be.
September 6, 200421 yr But you haven't solved the water problem. Something is wrong somewhere. That card should be performing better than that. You obviously think so, and we all agree. If you don't want to fix it, then why ask for help in the first place? We might have other things we could be doing you know?As you don't seem to want to take the easy path, why not reformat the hard drive, then reinstall Windows, then add chipset drivers, then add SP2, then add the correct up-to-date graphic drivers for your card. Only then will you be certain you have removed all the variables that may have contributed to the problem - which is almost certainly something in YOUR system, not the card. Or at the very least do a repair install of XP, then add SP2. After that, visit technical forums and ask for help there. They might have someone local who can come round and press the buttons for you.Allcott
September 9, 200421 yr Thanks for the insult, we'll probably all remember that the next time you ask for help. Did you bother to fix it? No, you sent the card back and got another. I hope that one works straight out of the box. Don't think it will, but I hope it does for your sake.Allcott
September 12, 200421 yr Author Sorry,But I think I detected some condescending tone to your message before I responded. I don't need anyone to come and "push the buttons for me". s
September 12, 200421 yr This is ridiculous. Poor performance has everything to do with the drivers installed, such as what drivers the user is running with that new 6800. Not "you didn't clean out all your old drivers"! nonsense, which is just that. Nonsense. Take a chill pill man, and get off the driver bandwagon
September 13, 200421 yr I have to tell you Michael that review was, for all practical purposes, useless as far as this water reflection issue is concerned. The banding visible in that screenprint IS NOT representative at all for what a properly installed 6800 renders: it's really the same or better than my Radeon 9700 Pro's. I don't know how hardoc.com did that but I have not been able to duplicate the appearance. That article swayed more than one person because of that bogus print, and it's unfortunate as it was not valid whatsoever.Noel Noel System: 9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync.
