November 26, 200421 yr Hi,After searching for definate answers to the ever ongoing virtual memory swapfile arguments, I would like to know the true answer. As far as I understand, the best thing is to have one swapfile placed on a partition where the FS in NOT installed. And on a partition with most available free space.?Now, I have 512 Mb memory, and when going to the swapfile manager, it tells me:Less alowed memory: 2 MbReccomended: 766 MbI have selected that Windows should manage the swopfiles on all my partitions.Should there be swapfiles on all partitions if windows manages them? Now, if I should manage the swapfile manually,...what should I do?I have FS9 installed on a F: partition, and the most available free space I can find on my G: partition. Windows is installed on the C: partition.I have learned that in this case, I should place one swapfile on the G: partition with 766 Mb placed in both windows (Original and Maximum size). Should I do that, and if so,...why? Shouldn Staffan
November 26, 200421 yr Hi Staffan,Info here: http://www.theeldergeek.com/p.htmand here: http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/virtualmemory.htmAlso, lot's available at the MS site (though wading through it all to get what you want can be a challenge).Hope this helps,Greg
November 26, 200421 yr I just made it easy on myself. Put it on the first partition on a separate harddrive and let windows handle the size. Then you don
November 26, 200421 yr I once read a definite treaty on the subject and this is what I do to maximize performance based on what I read.Set your minimum swap size to some value but do NOT set the maximum value. The question remains what should be the minimum value set to?To answer this question run FS2004 with all the bells and whistles and monitor the maximum value of your swap file through XP's system monitor. In my case the swap file never gets over 450 MB. So I set my minimum swap file to 600 MB. This approach gives you the best of both worlds - not too much HD is tied up with swap file and OS is not busy with neddlessly trying to manage the swap file size that can cause stutter.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2 Michael J.
November 26, 200421 yr I'm not sure that you can fix the stutters by changing your swapfile, unfortunately...But here are some rules of thumb that may be helpful..The optimum is not so much to have your swapfile in a separate partition, but on a separate harddrive from your FS installation. That allows the two harddrives to access data independently of one another. If you only have one harddrive, you do not have this option.Letting XP manage the swapfile is a good decision, since a manually managed swapfile always runs the risk of running out of space at some future date when you least expect it. Minimum swapfile size of 766MB is not a bad number... Now, some people, including myself, just have to keep control and refuse to hand this over to XP... so, if you are one of these folks, set min size to 766 and max size to twice that: 1532.That should work. First, defrag the partition though, and then set the swapfile parameters. Bert
November 26, 200421 yr Author Thanks to all of you. :-)I now understand a bit more about the whole thing....However, I decided to reinstall the whole FS9, and start from scratch. But I still get the 1 second stutter intervalls even on default scenery with default planes. Anyone else got this phenomenon?I even suspected that I got some spyware infection on my PC. Because this stuttering have been going on for about a week now. I didn Staffan
