Stutters / Jumping in FS2004 .. 6800GT

Featured Replies

Hi there.I have been looking around the forums and thought this was an ideal place to put my problems seeing as there is such alot of knowledgeable people out there!Right well here we go.I have Fs2004 running on in my opinion a decent system (see specs. below) however FS still continues to be stubborn.I have tried everything new drivers (forceware and the released WHQL's) to no avail. I formatted and reinstalled windows and fs9 but still I get the same prob. I can hold 50 FPS if I pan around it drops but then gets upto 50 in no time once the panning stops, however whilst taxying, taking off, T&G, Landing and just about noticeable when flying there is this micro stutter especially when turning. It may be very hard for some people to notice however I want perfection as so many people say their systems run smoothly and they have worse setups than mine. It is easily notioceable if you watch a taxiway sign or building as you turn or taxi you can see it moving past the window quite 'jerkily'! (thts not a word!). It really is irritating and I can't think of any way to sort it out.The other thing is that this is observed in a default 172 if I install a complex add-on e.g Aeroworx B200 or JusFlight Cessna 152 the fps dont lock and fluctuate a #### of a lot which I guess makes things even worse! OBVIOUSLY this makes me reluctant to install any of those beautiful planes that make fs what it is in my view. I will only be able to upgrade my fleet once I get to the root of this problem.Your help would be so gratefully appreciated. Sorry for the huge page of WAFFLE!Thanks guys, gals and other mysterious creatures...EliotAbit ASV-8 Guru, Intel P4 (3.2), 1GB DDR, SATA 160GB, PNY nVIDIA 6800GT, CREATIVE Sound Blaster live! 24 bit.

Have you tried locking the frame rate to 25? That seems to improve the micro stutter situation for me. (I have a 2 GHz P4.)-Jim

Sounds like a background task is eating into FS 2004 CPU time and causing stutters. Give Ken Salter's FSAutoStart, available in here in the AVSIM library, a go. Also, do a search in this forum to see which services are considered "safe" to turn off.Another thing that I have found that causes the largest stutters of all in FS 2004 is having a web page containing mucho java graphics maximised as a background window (or side window if you run multi-monitor). Minimising, or preferably closing, such windows clears away the stutters for me.Gary

My perspective on this problem, unfortunately, is pessimistic.I know exactly the issue you're referring to, and while there are many things that can be done to reduce it, IMHO there is nothing that gets rid of it.Some people have said that they don't have it, but I think some of us either don't notice it or get used to see it as normal.I have been tweaking my system for years, literally, and I have not gotten rid of it, while getting amazing FPS, well over 100 at times. The single biggest factor that helped for me is the driver choice. I think different drivers, especially NVidia

Assuming you've checked the driver situation as Rob says, one other feature of the Nvidia drivers is that some of the sliders in the Nvidia menu appear to be harmless little tweaks that you can just slide one or another and see what happens, when in fact they are vicious little buggers that can ruin your entire day!A prime example is the `image quality` slider. On some rigs the simple action of moving the image settings menu from `quality` to `high quality` causes a dramatic increase in stuttering. On others, its the selection of the Anti-Aliasing mode. Or Vsync OFF when it should be ON for all games is another (You only want vsync off for benchmarking)You have a most powerful card, so the first thing I'd try is INCREASING the settings in the card menu. A 6800 isn't even trying with a `vintage` game like FS9 and you can run the very highest resolutions without toom much trouble, but again having a different resolution in-game from the desktop can cause problems. There's a whole heap of things to try! Allcott

I'll try locking the frames tonight.I had read this somewhere and I think I might have already tried it but what the heck try try try again!Another problem is the panning around in the VC. It is not smooth like it always used to be (I think that was on a worse GFX card!)See what I can find regarding processes mind you not sure whether one should toy with these. And regarding the microstutter, I see what you are saying, maybe some people don't notice it? However I know people who say their computers run completely smooth, until a new player joins a multiplayer sesion say.It really annoys me that I cannot install too many add-on aircraft because as soon as I do that the fps wont lock properly and even if I lock at 25 they will fluctuate which I don't understand. Thanks for your replies guys, KEEP EM COMING!Eliot

Hi, This sounds like my machine...it's new and so is the 6800gt video but I still can't get the same as my old maching (2.4 intel)I now have a 3.73ee on a 925intel board and all I hear is this should screem but not happening .I'm open to all suggestions!!!TONY

Hi Eliot,As you are discovering, there is, unfortunately, no concise solution as this problematic area tends to be very system dependent. Not wishing to complicate your life further by adding to your frustrations I will make one suggestion which you may wish to consider. It might be worth trying to borrow one of Creative's Audigy cards and try it in place of the SB Live! I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that I read somewhere that the Audigy cards are more resource friendly than their predecessor. Perhaps others can chip in with advice on this.MikeEdit:P4 2.4GHz (400FSB), 1Gig PC2100 DDR Crucial, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Omega 2.6.05a), SB Audigy (5.12.0001.0443), Hyundai ImageQuest Q17 17" TFT LCD 20ms Monitor (1280x1024x32), Gigabyte GA-8IRXP MoBo, Ultra-Quiet PSU 400W, WinXP Home (SP2), DirectX 9.0c, AGP Aperture = 128MB

Hi One thing fixed it for me , if you dont use the VC a lot then just change the VC gauge detail down to low . This will of course make the default VC gauges look very ugly ,but a way round this is to up the pixel size in the panel config from 512,512 to 1024,1024 ..now when running the A/C you dont loose a lot of detail when selecting Low and you get better FPS and less stutters . Most add on A/C are set at 1024,1024 by default and dont need changing . Rich
