Not happy with the ATI X800XL

Featured Replies

In an attempt to better my flightsim experience, I recently upgraded from an ATI 9700 PRO to the X800XL.The frame rates have improved but I feel the display of textures did not. When turning the aircraft the ground textures become jagged and the jagged textures move. The building textures and other textures like approach lights and taxiways lines shimmer.FS9 display hardware settings:1024*768*32, target frame rate 20, render to texture, transform and lighting, anti-aliasing, filtering: trilinear, mip mapping quality 5, hardware-rendered lights 8, global max texture size: massiveCatalyst 5.7 drivers: AA 6x, anisotropic filtering 16x, texture preference: high quality, mapmap detail level: high qualityMaybe jagged and shimmering texutres is normal and I'm expecting too much, but I feel the 9700 PRO didn't suffer as much from this. So is this normal or can it be improved? Some screen shots of the jagged lines, can't catch the shimmering in screen shots. The screen shots don't look as bad for some reason but together with the movement of the jaggered lines it's very annoying.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122744.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122745.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122746.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122747.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/122748.jpg

In another thread here I reported kind of the same problem, see "major graphical problem". Obviously I don't have an answer to it, but all I can say is that when I had it working properly it looked truly brilliant! No shimmering at all, very clear textures on the ground and no jaggiedness whatsoever. It was a real pleasure flying at 2000 feet looking around in VC.I have a slightly quicker card, the X850XT, but I'd imagine you should be able to get that kind of quality too, depending on your CPU power of course.

marka, big no no - Uncheck antialiasing in the sim hardware display settings - let the card's AA settings handle it. You may also try dropping mip to 4.Generally I would suggest a higher resolution as well, your card can easily handle it.regards,MarkXPHomeSP2/FS9.1/3.2HT/1GIG/X700pro256

You might also want to try lowering the Global texture setting. You will not notice any visual difference while flying with it set tomedium, and it'll sure help your performance. The only changes I have noticed are windows in buildings, and theappearance of broadleaf trees....and then only on the ground. DN

Is this to be expected? From some comments it seems not.I'll remove the fs9.cfg file, if that doesn't help I might try another install. With ATI 5.7 drivers AA needs to be selected in FS.

Those shots do NOT show 16x anisotropic filtering. Something wrong there, for sure. When you installed the new card, did you remove all trace of drivers for the old? Driver Cleaner should be used for that. Also, the FS9.cfg needs to have the previous card references removed- not the whole .cfg, although it wouldn't do any harm to start from scratch, but to save time you can just remove the card section and then reboot the sim. Set the res, trilinear filtering and fps limit if needed, and you're done.Allcott
