How can I move Fs9..........

Featured Replies

i have to replace the HD that contains my Fs9 Folder complete with all it's add-to's; payware and freeware. To complicate matters, the HD is Partitioned. Can the Fs9 Folder be 'cloned', or similar, by a program such as Norton Ghost or Maxtor Maxblast?Any help will be appreciated.KenSomerset, England

KEN The simplest way is to copy you full version of fs9 from the original to where ever to where ever with windows explorer.Tony

Hi Tony,Thanks for your reply, I'm afraid you're right. My problems are going to be trying to re-install things like PMDG B737NG and such like.Guess I'll have to 'grin and bear it' though.KenSomerset, England

i've moved my FS9 a few times using this method due to upgrades/drive changes/railures, ll frreeware moved without problems, and s far as i can remember the only problems where with flight one/dream fleet and FSD (these had to be re-installed, then any mods could be coppied over), PSS, PMDG, Corenado, etc. coppied over no problem

Hi Bruce,Thanks for your reply also.I did copy Fs9 over to the new HD Partition in the end; only I went the long way round to do it :). What I did was to add the new destination to my 'Send to' List - it seems to be working fine, I did have to reassure Windows Firewall that it was OK to let Fs9 connect to the Internet and round up a few files that were not within the Fs9 Folder.KenSomerset, England

Why wouldn't using Ghost be an easier way to switch FS9 from one HD to another?

Hi Bob,I've been wondering when someone was going to ask that question :) - my version of Ghost is the 2003 one. Ghost and I get along best when we leave each other well alone. I've used Ghost about 3 times to try and back up my HD, each time it used about about 8/9 CD's then stopped working! I now use Powerquest Drive Image 7 for backups. One day I'll make a big effort and read the Ghost Manual. The 'Send to' method worked fine, in this case, and no DOS to complicate matters. My first PC used a DOS system, ugh! Thanks for your reply.KenSomerset, England

>>Ghost and I get along best when we leave each other well alone.<< I'm hearing you, Ken! Thank goodness, Norton's Ghost is history and now Ghost is Partition Magic in a ghost frock. :-) If there's one software outfit whose products I'll avoid and hardly recommend, it's Symantec (perhaps minus Ghost9 because it's Partiton Magic). Yesterday, I read an article about (de)fragmentation which amongst others, also covered Norton's System Works defrag 'utility'. Instead of defragging the drive, System Works increased fragmentation by almost 50%! This article was a highly interesting read and I'll try to come back with a brief expos

>KEN >> The simplest way is to copy you full version of fs9 from>the original to where ever to where ever with windows>explorer.>Don't we get problems with the registry if we do that?

Any copy method will always be problematic if registry settings are involved in any of the setups since these will not be copied and, in essence, the OS will not 'know' about the copied installation. If you could find all the registry keys involved and update them then, in theory, you should be okay - but I'd probably just bite the bullet and do a clean install of FS...
