November 30, 200520 yr I have a question regarding connecting my PC w/6800GT card to a bigscreen TV.I am planning on buying a 32"-52" TV w/integrated HDTV. I want to use it for my FS9 as well as HDTV Football etc... in my den. What would be the best system? I hear Plasmas are prone to burn-in, DLP's need bulb replacement, so I guess my choice should be an LCD? Will a rear projection LCD be a good choice? Can I connect through an HDMI port with a DVI to HDMI adapter? We have a 65" HDTV ready rear projection CRT system in the living room, and althought it does a great job with Cable HD, it's not so great with the PC hooked up!Any advice, suggestions or recommendations will be greatly appreciated!Pete S. December 1, 200520 yr DLP is your best bet...but if you are not happy with your CRT HDTV resolution...Don't expect anything better with other technology. What counts is resolution...wich is not going to change.I wanted the same route and decided against it and went with DELL 24" monitor which had the best resolution (the highest). more than HDTV. December 1, 200520 yr Author Thanks Manny,Guess my best bet would be to go a store like Ultimate Electronics, Best Buy or Circuit City and make an actual test/comparison, that is exactly what I plan to do on Friday. I just thought I should get some insight from people, prior to going shopping.Your opinion is noted and appreciated. Thanks again.Pete S. December 1, 200520 yr Get DLP. HUGE difference to me.As for going to a Best Buy or Circuit City. May I suggest going to a local store that does home theater. Not sure about Circuit City or Ultimate Electronics, but Best Buy carries what I would assume is lower class items. Different model numbers compared to other stores.
December 1, 200520 yr I work in the field of Ultra High end Video diplay devices ( projectors that range from around $15, 000 to over $100,000 each ) that are used in everything including commercial airline flight sims. I run the training department for an International company in this field for 3 more months and then I am retiring :). Stay away from plasma for the reason you cited. Your choices that are left are LCD and DLP. If you prefer a rear projection unit and want a fairly good size picture for HDTV ( around 70-80 inches for the average living room ), then DLP is the only way to go. LCD doesn't come in sizes that large, and if it did, it would cost a fortune. I have seen some of the large rear screen projection sets at Best Buys- Circuit City- Hi Fi Buys, by Manufacturers like Mitsubishi, Sony, Samsung, etc, that have excellent pictures. The salesman probably won't know much except the price, so you are going to have to rely on your own eyes to figure out which one to get. Another way to go, if you don't have alot of ambient light where you want to install this TV, is a front projector with a good screen. Again, I would go with DLP only and you can get a 2500+ lumen projector for around 2 to 3 thousand dollars that could easily give you a 8 foot wide picure. The only problem is that you would have to mount the projector in the ceiling or on a table in the middle of your living room. These are made by companies like InFocus, Proxima, NEC, etc.....http://www.avdeals.com/video_projectors.htmBoth of these type of projectors should have RGB, DVI, and HDTV inputs.....
December 1, 200520 yr Author Projection is out, my Den is really not that big, a 42" to 52" TV would be perfect, I already have a 65" Samsung HDTV in the living room.I think I narrowed my choices to either DLP and rear-projection LCD or LCoS. At the present time I am leaning towards a couple of LCD's, a 42" Sony or a 50" Hitachi. Guess I will make my decision when I see and compare these with whatever else is out there.I do have an audio Video/Store nearby that specializes in Home Theatres, and although I always thought they were pricey, they know their business and merchandise, it would be a good place to start looking.Pete S. December 5, 200520 yr Author Well after looking at a whole lot of different big screens, I finally made a choice.I bought a ViewSonic 3250W 32" LCD. It has a great sharp picture and running WinXP on it at 1360x768 resolution everything looks great, including FS2004. I am using the VGA hookup from my gForce 6800GT card, and find it quite sufficient. I could also hook it up to the DVI output of the card with a HDMI-DVI Cable. This TV/Monitor has a bunch of different input connections including DMI, VGA, both Analog and Digital component hookups, S-Video and the Standard Video RCA jacks. It only has an NTSC tuner, so HD requires an external Digital Tuner or Cable TV Box. I also purchased a Samsung SRI-T431 HD Tuner and am getting a fantastic HD picture right off the air. The picture is sharp, bright and clear. The ViewSonic cost me $1057, it lists at $1199. Great monitor if you want to really see your FS in a large format and also watch some HD Programs or DVD movies. I recommend it to anyone looking for a large Wide Screen Monitor for the PC as well as for viewing TV/DVD or whatever. It even has PIP for viewing two different programs at once.
