Question to Dell 2405/7 Widescreen owners

Guys,Dell are offering the 2407 widescreen monitor at a very attractive price (UKP610) until the end of August and I'm sorely tempted. The problem is one of resolution. I currently have a 9800Pro 128Mb card which runs okay at 1280*1024 but could probably not provide fast enough frame rates if it was pushed to 1920*1200 (the native res of the Dell). I'm not buying a faster card until I build a new PCI-Express system. However, there's every chance it could support a widescreen resolution of 1440*900 or similar 16:10 format resolution if it was available. Can those of you with this screen list which widescreen resolutions are available please? I don't want to make an expensive mistake by buying a screen that can't run 16:10 at lower than native resolutions. The Dell site only lists non-widescreen resolutions.Thanks.

Hi Davis,Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I will now think very carefully about this. The point about banding was with graphics software. Maybe it won't be such an issue with FS.To balance the argument he did say it copes very well with non-native resolutions and with gaming. I'm sure I could see banding on my current TFTs and maybe that's a weakness with that design.I did some more digging and found this. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/conte...l_2xx7wfp_2.htm Seems it's not just banding that's concerning people although how significant the delay would be in FS9 is unclear. It might explain why the price has dropped so significantly even allowing the fact it's made in China.Cheers,

Hi Davis,I did a bit more digging on this monitor and came across this user review who interestingly has the A02 revision model. No banding problems at all for him. www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5547I did investigate the Samsung but it received quite poor reviews in the UK computer press. The Dell got top marks and no mention of banding. I'm wondering if this is an issue only with the A00 revision. :-hmmm1680*1050 is a full-screen resolution which could suit my needs perfectly.Cheers,

Morw digging on the earlier mentioned forum found this reply from Dell...I wanted to reiterate the fix for the banding issue and give everyone an update.Dell has a 2007FP, 2007WFP, 2407 firmware update (A02) that switches off the Faroudja video processing ACC (Adaptive Color and Contrast) & ACM (Active Color Management) features. This eliminates the banding issue when using the Desktop mode only (not in Multimedia Mode or Gaming Mode) using 1680 x 1050 at 60 Hz for the 2007FP/WFP and 1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz for the 2407. The factory has been working overtime to flash the monitors to the A02 firmware. This flash can't be done at your home. The firmware flashed A02 monitors will be in place at our hubs by July 5th. At that time, you can use the normal Dell Support channels to initiate an Exchange for a fixed A02 monitor. Contact us either by Chat, Email, or Phone. Tell the representative that you have an A00 or A01 (2007FP, 2007WFP, 2407) monitor with the banding issue and that you need an Exchange to a monitor with the A02 firmware. So, providing the monitor is in Desktop mode at th native resolution the banding problem is fixed. Unfortunately until I can upgrade my graphics card I won't be able to run at that res but at least the banding issue has been resolved.Cheers,

Seems that they have or at least tried to fix the problems, however maybe its safer to get another screen?. like a viewsonic or something instead of a dell?.. Im just starting to doubt the brand, maybe it is still good dont know but i hear too many complaints, for instance the whole laptop thing a while ago i know its not related to the LCD but its the same company. again thats just my opinion..i phoned Iiyama Tokio and got me a 32'Iiyama instead of that dell and im happy with it ;)

I will be getting another screen but for entirely different reasons. Looking at the available resolutions on the Dell website it struck me that the only widescreen resolution is the native one - 1920*1200. All the others are 4:3.So if you want to run at a lower 16:10 widescreen resolution such as 1680*1050 I don't think you can. This is a major concern that other potential purchasers of the 2405/7 should be aware of .You can only run at 4:3 resolutions such as 1024*768 which will be stretched to fit the screen. So what's the point of spending all that money if you can't get widescreen resolutions other than one so high it kills FS performance? Looks like Dell have dropped a bit of a clanger.Pity though as the quality and style is good. I'll look at Iiyama but they haven't done as well in the reviews. Does yours allow you to run at non-native widescreen resolutions?Yes, I saw the picture of the Dell laptop engulfed in flames. Probably wouldn't happen to a LCD ;-)Cheers,

The 2407 also does 1:1 pixel mapping so you could display a lower resolution without scaling, using black borders.

With respect what's the point of buying a large expensive monitor and not using all the available screen?I've been digging a bit more about FS9 and widescreen compatibility. It seems it is fully widescreen compatible and can run at various resolutions. What I'm not sure about is whether the Dell 2407 can show FS9 in a 16:10 format at a lower resolution than 1920*1200.If someone could give me the answer to that it would solve everything. I've looked at alternative displays but nothing comes close to the quality or price of the 2407.Cheers,

Hi Par,FS9 does according to Microsoft. Take a look at the resolutions available under Options / Settings / Display / Hardware. It only becomes a problem when 2D panels are displayed as they remain in their original format. Virtual panels and full forward view will resize without distortion.Cheers,

Those extinct elephants... Direct translation from Swedish maybe they are named something else in english :D.Anyway something big ;)

FS9 and FSX have support for Widescreen for everything but 2d panels. 2d Panels have a slight quirk where the location the hitbox is in (where you click) is skewed off from the actual screen position of the switch or button. Be aware of that (it'll affect FSX too) about the 2d Panels. 3d Panels are perfectly fine.I would suggest going with a ViewSonic professional model. I personally have a VP2030b and it is absolutely astounding. I am picking up two more to combine with a Matrox TripleHead2Go.
