Cockpit views on big LCD screens

Featured Replies

I got a Samsung 22 inch LCD monitor for X-mas and it is the cats meow for sure. Gaming is almost a new experience on this. One thing that is puzzling me is that at the native res of the screen which makes everything look right, the add-on cockpits are slightly stretched. VC's are fine but I like the 2D panels on most of my add-on aircraft. What resolution do i need to run at in order to take advantage of all this real estate but not get the stretching problem? Thanks for any tips!Hornit

You should run your monitor at its native resolution ie 1280x800, 1920x1200 etc.Because most 2D panels are designed in a 4x3 format (eg 1024x768) you will always get stretching. You can remove the ovality by reducing the horizontal components of your gauges to 87% eggauge07 = Cessna!Airspeed, 40, 60, 100, 100 change this to:gauge07 = Cessna!Airspeed, 40, 60, 87, 100 For a 'proper' fix the background image needs to be re-drawn in a widescreen (8x5) format. In the panel.cfg file the whole of window00 will then need to be re-configured to use this additional space and the size_mm parameter changed to reflect the size of the panel image (eg size_mm=1280,800)RegardsJim

Either run FS in a window and scale down that window accordingly or, if you run full screen, pick the highest 4:3 res that will fit on your display and ensure your display adaptor is set to NOT scale to the monitors full size. Either way, you will be essentially running as though you only had a 4:3 screen, hence will lose the widescreen portion of the game with your display - it's a compromise! Personally, I use VC almost exclusively now that I have TrackIR and the odd few times I need to switch to 2D panel to flick a non-VC operable switch I just put up with the brief distorted panel.Gary

This might seem stupid, but i cant seem to find how to get the monitor to not scale to full size. Any help here??Thanks.Hornit

I'm not sure I understand your question, but alt-enter will change FS to windowed mode from full-screen.If you are trying to get the window not to stretch to the whole width of the monitor, that will depend on the graphics card and capabilities of the monitor. It may not be possible. How many aircraft do you tend to fly? Your best bet is to resize the panel background texture and gauges to fit the screen ratio. You might be able to get away with just resizing the gauges in the panel.cfg. It's ok if you only have 2 or 3 planes you fly, but if you fly lots of planes, then it's kind of a bummer having to edit a bunch of planes. One of the reasons I prefer to fly from the VC (and therefore look for planes with good VC's), situational awareness is another. <>Usually it's an option somewhere in the monitors OnScreen Display menu (ie its a monitor setting, not a video driver or FSX setting).

Along this line, I have heard that larger LCD screens, say like 37", really give a terrific picture (has to be 1080 res), cost is kinda high, but so is everything with this hobby.......anyone have such a setup??

This is how it looks with the nVidia classic control panelhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/165710.jpgTry either centered output or fixed aspect ratio scaling with FS in full screen mode.Sorry, should have added that you need to click on device settings -> device adjustments to get the window on the right to come up.Gary
