13.5 FPS with 2 Monitors on a New Dual Core Reasonable??

Recommended Posts

I just bought a new Dell and I really haven't tweaked it much yet, but I keep reading posts from people that are getting 50 to 60 FPS and I would think I should be getting better than I am, even if I am running two monitors, with a 3rd on another computer using WideView. I've been reading and reading but I can't determine if this is about the best I can do with my current set up.Computer 1:Dimension E520 (WideView Server)Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6420 (2.13GHZ,1066FSB) with 4MB cache2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHzPNY GeForce 7600 GS1280 x 768 x 32Computer 2:eMachines 3.2 ghz Celeron550 fsb (?)2GB DDR2 SDRAMATI X1300 Pro 256k1280 x 768 x 32Everything was absolutely beautiful as long as I only used WideView with one monitor each on the Dell and eMachines but as soon as I open the second window on the Dell, resize it and move it to the other monitor, it just starts to lug out -- it's like trying to fly FSX again! Even if I close down WideView, my Dell maxes out at 17 or 18 FPS, which is ok, but I REALLY love the idea of flying with 3. (I can't run two monitors on the eMachines client as the WideView manual suggests because the eMachines runs at 7 - 8 FPS with 2.) I'm flying in windowed mode.I have Ground Environment Pro and all levels of FS Genesis loaded, flying the default Baron 58, no Active Sky or overly complex add on scenery. Most of my sliders aren't more than 80%, with Traffic at 50%. I use FSAuto Start, have all virus, background services and extraneous programs closed and just think I should be in the 20s at least, but I've only been simming for about 7 months now, and if I could just squeeze out 5 or 6 more FPS that would help -- but I don't have enough experience to know if that's a reasonable expectation.PLEASE SAVE ME FROM MYSELF! I WILL go out and spend hundreds on yet a THIRD machine if I have to, but my wife is now officially getting annoyed with my Flight Sim expenditures -- and I can't really blame her. I've included my fs9.cfg file if anyone would be so kind as to take a look at it and share any insight you might have. If this is pretty good performance, just let me know.Thank you folks in advance for any insight you might be able to provide.Best Sounds like you are running your 7600 card in dual view, which is known to kill performance running two 3D outputs. Try running this video card in horizontal span mode (set up in nVidia control panel), which makes it one big 3D output across two monitors. Works for me!Gary

One other question, if you don't mind. The frame rates are awesome, but I now seem to get some picture degradation when I span both monitors like that. I can't seem to get a high enough resolution on both monitors. Do you find this to be the case on your system? Is there any way to "force" the nVidia card to give a higher resolution than, say the 2048 x 768 it's offering. I'd like to get that 768 higher, as the trees and ground don't look as good as the single screen on the eMachines with the ATI card. Would this be in the realm of "overclocking" (which I've never done)?Thank you again.Chuck

Chuck,The maximum resolution that gets offered when in span mode should be the lowest common vertical resolution capability of both monitors detected. For example, I have two identical 1680x1050 LCDs and, since both are capable of 1050 vertical resolution, when I go to spanned mode I get 3360x1050 as an option. If, however, I attached a lower res LCD of say 1440x900 instead of one of my LCDs, then the lowest comment res would be 768, so I would expect to get a max spanned resolution of somethingx768.What are the max resolutions of each display before spanning?Gary

Thanks, Gary. I'll double check tonight, but I was sure that they were both higher res than 768 or 800 -- both certainly look better when running as solo monitors. It seems pretty obvious that I'm wrong though, if the max vertical res being offered by the nvidia drivers/control panel is 768.Chuck

Also consider that some items do get stretched when going to spanned mode. 2D panels in particular do not scale with spanning, so your options are to either use VCs (like I do) or undock your 2D panels and adjust them back to correct proportions on one screen. Even when you are in VC mode, the same zoom level will look different spanned or single screen. eg. When I am in spanned mode, I use a zoom of 0.33, but when in single screen I use 0.50. This is with FS9 mind you, as FSX actually corrects the zoom level automatically when you change screen sizes.Once you get it set up to your taste, the results can be quite spectacular :-)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/174753.jpgGary

Thanks, Gary. I'll double check those resolutions again when I get home. My "45 degrees to the right" view is the solo panel, WideView client running on the old eMachines celeron, and it looks awesome. The trees and landscape are beautiful and very richly detailed, and I'm trying to make the spanned Dell look as good -- which may not be possible. I'll post a couple of screen shots tonight so you can see what I'm talking about. It's just weird that, on the spanned Dell, it seems like I get better resolution on one monitor when spanning than I do on the other -- it may simply be because one is smaller -- 17 inch vs. 19 inch. I'll definitely try the VC approach as I've been using spanned desktop with two FS windows open in 2D cockpit view - the center flat panel (the 19 incher) looking straight ahead with the minipanel open, and the left flat panel at an approx. 45 degree angle (one of the few tweaks I've made to my FS9.cfg file is the "pan_in_cockpit_view=1" so I can pan with the hat switch in 2D view). But, man you are so right about it being a spectacular experience, though -- even with the slightly reduced resolutions there is nothing like flying with 2 or 3 panels - the gain in immersion due to the more realistic field of view alone is worth it!! Hey, know anybody who wants to buy a two month old Track IR Pro? :-D Since you've been helping me, I have a feeling I won't be using it much any more. :-)I'll update you tonight, if you don't mind. I really had no idea what I was doing with this set up. Having to spend more hundreds on that 3rd computer is looking less and less necessary! Thanks again. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help!ChuckKPHL, KVAY

Darn, I wanted to try this too, but here's from the Control panel's help listing for span mode: "NOTE: The ability to stretch the desktop across both displays using Horizontal or Vertical Span modes is not available under Windows Vista."Not so Ultimate. Maybe next driver.

That I don't see a difference doesn't mean there is NoT a difference, So, (other than it's not available in Vista) How's span view different than that $300 TH2G?

John - you've got to think BIG ! Six projectors, a motion platform AND an ejection handle that really works!!!Never was in a Link Trainer but I do remember standing under the wing of a brand new & shiny yellow AVRO ANSON twin and thinking it was the most beautiful thing in the world. But then I wasn't old enough to have discovered girls!Cheers Alex Ried CYYJ
