Rumor of the Day: AMD pulls a stunner?

Featured Replies

This was started by the Inq which has very little credibility (and Theo in particular who is about the worst out of the bunch):http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=41970Bascially, it is claiming that a Barcelona chip clocked at 3GHz will be able to significantly outperform an Intel Quad core clocked at 5GHz in 3DMark06.As uncredible as Theo is, I found this article a little striking because most of the time the Inq cites other sources and can lay blame at others feet or blame mis-communication when it proves false. If this one turns out wrong, it can't be construed as anything other than a bold-faced lie. I imagine many will burn the Inq for good if it proves false.Anyway, later on the owner of XtremeSystems (Fugger, who apparently is one of the Net's reknowned overclockers and not shy on credibility) posted "30K is a 2K5 score. Theo is mistaken" on page 6 of this thread:http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=156932But the kicker, as you can read in that thread, is that 30K is still a RIDICULOUS score, even for 3DMark05. It takes an Intel C2D or Quad core clocked in the neighborhood of 5GHz to match that score with similarily configured 2900XTs.Is AMD going to pull off a stunnig upset here and crush Penryn? I would have never thought it possible, but I'm starting to buy into this a little. If true, holy ####.

Well thats certianly not what ive been hearing about barcelona.

... also, I see pointed out in that thread is that the CTO for HP's global gaming division said in his blog last week:"And for the record, if you were to benchmark Phenom at 3GHz you would see that it kicks the living crap out of any current AMD or Intel processor

>Well thats certianly not what ive been hearing about>barcelona.Nor I. Nor anybody really. That's why this would be such a stunner. I figured that in the position AMD is now financially that even if they could keep something like this under wraps, they wouldn't... they don't have that much $ in the bank right now, and it seems like bouying their stock would be of utmost importance. If this proves true, I gotta give AMD props for having big cajunas.

Im guessing that this is fake.

>Im guessing that this is fake.I definetly said the same about the Inq's story at first. But with XtremeSystem's Fugger and HP's gaming CTO backing him up (to a degree anyway), I've definetly moved into the "want to believe" camp and am knocking on the door of the believers. The NDA expires Sept 10, so either way, we'll know soon enough.(at least if it IS a fake, it will be fun to watch the ensuing torching of the Inq)

Well this will be interesting ;)

I don't know what to think.... :-hmmmSeems like Intels really on the ball today but I was hoping AMD would come back with something significant :-samurai

Lies, all. If this were true it would have already been leaked.Amd's days are over I'm afraid.________________________________________________________________________________________________Intel D975XBX2 'Bad Axe 2' | Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.20Ghz | 2 GB Super Talent DDR2 800 | Big Typhoon VX | eVGA 8800GTS @ 565/900 | Seagate 2x320GB SATA RAID-0 | OCZ GameXStream 700W | Creative X-Fi | Silverstone TJ-09BW | Matrox Triplehead Setup

>Amd's days are over I'm afraid. Not over, just cyclic; they leap-frog about every five years or so and this has been going on for decades. It's just Intel's lead for now.I would like to believe that the Phenom is at least competetive, from a competetive-price point of view.Oh well, we shall see. Just stand back and watch the rat-race.

Yeah, amd will be back then we will say the same about intel.

I'm starting to think the best possibility is the 3 x 2900XT possibility raised in the XS thread. According to a post on page 8, despite specifically stating he was running 2 2900s in his article, he replied to an email and stated he wasn't sure if there were 2 or 3. First of all, not knowing how many were in there certainly adds points to the already high the BS factor (can you OC without knowing how many there are?). Given AMD did have 3 2900's in their famed 3GHz demos, it would seem logical Theo's system could very well have had 3 as well. While I think 30K would probably still be a good score for a chip at 3GHz with 3 2900XTs, its probably also a much more realistic number. I definetly agree there is a lot to be skeptical of when it comes to the Inq and Theo. Still, I'll be stunned if he had the balls to completely fabricate results. If he was going to do that, I think he would have claimed a 3rd party source gave him the numbers. I'm guessing there's a least some part of this that ends up being grounded in reality whether or not any of the proported results are significant at all.
