December 31, 200718 yr Is anyone using this card for FSX? I am thinking of getting either this card or the 8800GT. I have read about the problems with the 8800 series cards. Wondering if anyone has experience with ATI's latest offering. JohnMy first SIM was a Link Trainer. December 31, 200718 yr ATI Sucks dont use them. Thanks, you just reminded me why I don't hang out here much anymore.
December 31, 200718 yr Author Could you be a bit more specific. No, I am not on a budget and I have used ATI cards in the past with good results. That was then and this is now. I am not interested in the 'technology. It often sucks (to use your term) in value and has early release problems.I will either get an 8800GT 512mb or 3870 512mb. Both of these cards seem to offer the best bang for the buck. JohnMy first SIM was a Link Trainer. December 31, 200718 yr If you want to turn up Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering, resolution, and all those other advanced options, then I would go for the 8800 GT (which I am). I read in a review that the 3870 loses about 6-7 FPS if you turn everything up. The 8800 GT is a better performer, but the 3870 is a good choice if you can't afford an 8800. December 31, 200718 yr I added an ATI 3870 to my computer recently. I only have an AMD 3800x2 CPU and did the card make a difference. Now everything is much smoother, good looking eye candy and well worth the money.
December 31, 200718 yr Hi Greg,Don't let the opinion of a new poster who hasn't had a positive thing to say about anything since his arrival keep you away. We're still using some of your wisdom :-) Please keep it up! Regards,Jim Karn
January 2, 200818 yr I thought it was hype, but now I must agree, IQ on ATI seems just plain cleaner than with my nV6800GT/OC. I have an ATI 1950 Pro AGP now, but only use FS9. Again, sharper IQ with the ATI. The 1950 Pro is a nice improvement over my 6800, which died a few months back. After I bought the 1950 I realized my BFG 6800 was lifetime warrantied: they sent me a new (probably refurbed I'm guessing) 7800GS. I installed it, and voila, IQ deteriorated. This is INDEPENDENT of the OS & driver, and in fact even the post screen is cleaner with my ATI card vs EITHER nV card. On the downside, non-native resolutions won't resize on my LCD.I am building a new machine and will use a new penryn quad I believe, or maybe just 2 core, and will wait for a DX10.1 card. Not sure which gpu tho, nV or ATI.Noel Noel System: 9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync.
