March 23, 200818 yr In both FS 2004 and the FSX demo, I can get good FPS (50+) but every second or so there is a slight "stutter" or "jerk" in the video. This is most noticeable during turns. It appears in full screen and windowed mode. I also get jerkiness in the "top-down" view.Minimizing all the display and hardware options does not help. Neither does changing the resolution from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024. Also, setting the FPS cap to Unlimited does not help.I don't notice it in any other apps, just FS 2004 and FSX.Has anyone else noticed this problem?Any ideas on how to fix it?Thanks!Travisp.s. March 23, 200818 yr My system drive is a 150GB Western Digital Raptor (IDE, 10K RPM).FS2004 and FSX are installed on a separate drive, which is a Seagate 7200.10 SATA.
March 23, 200818 yr Moderator It sounds like you have other applications running that are taking resources away from FSX. It's important even with quite powerful systems to run as lean a system as possible.I had a flight earlier tonight from KSFO down to LAX. Even though the skies were clear the sim was noticeably smooth. Something I haven't previously seen even with clear skies. It could be a concidence but I recently installed Ken Salter's Alacrity program (a replacement for FSAutoStart) and this allows you to shutdown many programs and services you may not even be aware are running. You can get it here. http://alacritypc.kensalter.com/ It's donationware. I've paid Ken for this great program which looks like being a sure-fire winner. Ray (Cheshire, England). March 24, 200818 yr Thanks!I recently installed Vista SP1, and I just noticed that it added some nVidia drivers back to my msconfig. I removed them, and will try to see if I can remove some other services as well.If you had to guess, which of these would you think is the most likely culprit:1) AVG (antivirus)2) speedfan (temperature/voltage monitor)3) windows media player (which was open but not running)4) windows firewallI'll try disabling some of these and see what helps.
March 24, 200818 yr Good news!!! I am no longer getting the jerkiness. Here's what I did:1) used msconfig to disable the nVidia stuff2) deleted c:windowsehomeehtray.exe (after taking ownership of it)3) rebootedNow everything is smooth. So that means AVG and speedfan are fine. :)Thanks for telling me to check the TSRs!
March 24, 200818 yr >Thanks for telling me to check the TSRs!Holy moley - TSR! Now THERE's an acronym I haven't read in a looooong time. Can you say DOS?:D
March 24, 200818 yr Moderator That's good news. :-) I would lose AVG as well but just during your flights. Ask yourself what programs / services you need whilst you're flying. You can probably lose a few services too but tread carefully. That's why AlacrityPC is useful - it prevents you closing essential services.TSRs! You're showing your age ;-) Ray (Cheshire, England). March 24, 200818 yr Yup.special tools to load drivers into upper memory so you'd have more free RAM below the 640KB barrier. Those were the days...
March 31, 200818 yr Someone asked me how to use msconfig to remove the nvidia stuff. Here's the steps I took:1) click Start button2) click Run...3) type "msconfig" in the box4) click OK5) open the Startup tab6) uncheck the boxes to the left of the NVIDIA entries (I have 3)7) click OK8) rebootIf you have problems you can re-check those boxes the same way.
March 31, 200818 yr Ha happened to me something similar in FS2004 with a ATI X800XL 256-bit 256MB card. I used to solve the problem by accessing display options (the normal Windows right clicking on Desktop way) and de-selecting and re-selecting the options regarding AA, SF and quality/Performance. No ATI Tools were able to solve the problem. I see you have NVidia I don't know.... confirm that base and FS profile have similar options. Create FS Nvidia profiles with nHancer, but modify it using windows Nvidia control panel....Also dont' use AA and AF both in FS and Video card settings. Just some hints.Sam______________________________________Flight Simmers never get drunk........ Just get their Yaw-Damper disactivated. Sam.
