8800GT performance questions

Featured Replies

Hi again, I've replaced my x800xt with an 8800GT about 5 weeks ago and am wondering whether or not I've been expecting too much by way of performance increases. I've struggled to get AA/AF to hold, but seem to have figured that out, yet still have a shimmering mess when compared to the old ATI board and sometimes struggle to hold 20FPS when on the ground or through heavy cumulus.I'll post my pertinent settings and would like some opinions on if this is typical or maybe I have a bad board? I run a 500 watt PSU, 50% fan in Rivatuner which yields about 46C under load so heat is not the issue. NO addons yet, all stock FSX except Treex trees, default AI deleted - all WOAI and a few home FP's converted. Memstatus shows about 1.9 GB memory and 420 MB GPU mem. being used -XP pro 32 bit. BTW, I am running dual monitor with VC at 1920x1200 and guages on 1280x1024 - stock Lear45 usually being flown. Thanks for any help! Nhancer settings: 4xs AA, 16x HQ AF, gamma correction, Vsync off, clamped LOD, HDR enabled, cpu support single core, everything else off.FSX.CFG Settings: [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT .0]ForceFullScreenVSync=FalseMode=1920x1200x32[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT .1]ForceFullScreenVSync=FalseMode=1024x768x32[DISPLAY]ForceFullScreenVSync=FalseTEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=20WideViewAspect=True http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187444.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187445.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187446.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187447.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/187449.jpgRegards, Kendall#1: [email protected]/Coolermaster HyperTX2 Gigabyte P35-DS3L 4GB Ballistix Tracers PC6400 EVGA 8800GT - 174.74 beta Seagate 250GB 7200.11 CH Yoke/Pedals/Saitek Throttle Dual Monitor: Dell 2405/1905 #2: Dell 8400 3.2 H.T. 3GB PC4200 - X800XT Diamond Xtreme/Logitech X-530's

You should have seen a major improvement in FSX frame rates from your upgrade, based on comparisons by Tom's Hardware:http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_200...2=742&chart=293However, based on my own experience, you are expecting too much of your system. I run a fairly similar configuration, as you can see from my sig. I have adjusted my sliders to aim for 30 fps (locked) with FTX and the RAS Spitfire. To get this performance, my settings are significantly lower than you in three key areas: weather, autogen and traffic. My cloud draw distance is at minimum. I run normal autogen and all traffic is off except for 15% road traffic. Even then, heavy clouds drop me 10 fps below my setpoint. On the other hand I run very high water and this would have a big impact over your settings. My only tweaks (as recommended by FTX) are:[TERRAIN]TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=2500TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=1600 [sCENERY]SmallPartRejectRadius=2[Main]DisablePreload=1In summary, I think your results are fairly reasonable for your system and your FSX settings. The only way forward is a faster CPU, assuming your PC has been sorted and maintained properly. I have used Nick's system tweaks and found a small improvement in performance; my system was already running pretty well.Hope this helps!Noel.

Hey Noel, very well stated - that helps a great deal, as is gives me a good reference point based on the similiarity of our hardware and settings. I referenced the Tom's chart before I purchased and while I have gained a notch on one slider (autogen) between the two cards and I do have more consistent FR's, it seems like something goes awry after I've had a driver installed for more than a few days.I ran 3dMark 06 last night and FWIW my score was 8278, when comparable machines are in the 11,000-12,000 range. I'll try yet another install and see if things change. I also might clean up some drivers and re-install the ATI board for comparison. Something just seems amiss in my system and if needed I'll RMA the board and try again. Thanks again!Regards, Kendall#1: [email protected]/Coolermaster HyperTX2 Gigabyte P35-DS3L 4GB Ballistix Tracers PC6400 EVGA 8800GT - 174.74 beta Seagate 250GB 7200.11 CH Yoke/Pedals/Saitek Throttle Dual Monitor: Dell 2405/1905 #2: Dell 8400 3.2 H.T. 3GB PC4200 - X800XT Diamond Xtreme/Logitech X-530's

I'll have to give a whirl harley - lord knows I've tried every AA/AF combination already with this board but haven't really given the in game stuff a chance. Anyway, re-installed the XG 174.74's tonight and 3d mark 06 went from 8278 to 11,773 and FSX/FS9 seem back to normal, ugly IQ aside. Anyone know why my drivers keep getting corrupted? I use Nhancer and shut down everything else Nvidia except the Driver Helper Service. Thanks.Regards, Kendall#1: [email protected]/Coolermaster HyperTX2 Gigabyte P35-DS3L 4GB Ballistix Tracers PC6400 EVGA 8800GT - 174.74 beta Seagate 250GB 7200.11 CH Yoke/Pedals/Saitek Throttle Dual Monitor: Dell 2405/1905 #2: Dell 8400 3.2 H.T. 3GB PC4200 - X800XT Diamond Xtreme/Logitech X-530's

I don't like using Nhancer...Just try all default and check the top3D item....( in control panel) the game handles filtering better than the card does for FSXNhancer is probably to blamb for your corruption........The 174.74 is a good driver.....

That's bull, I use nHancer with far greater success that in-game AA and AF!If you run in-game AA, you'll get a lot of shimmering, especially from trees. If you use nHancer and bump up to 8x or 16x AA (which the card can handle), it will be very nice looking.

Hence so many FSX problems and different answers.....

On my machine, I run AA and AF at max in nvidia control panel. Seems to help with shimmering. Interesting that your 3dmark06 went up after reinstalling drivers. Mine is 10,897, but I'm not OC'd.Bob
