ram access

Featured Replies

I have 2 Core Duo E6600 4 gig ram. What exactly do I have toto the FSX.cfg, to make it access more than 2 gig of ram?I have FSX on Vista Home Premium 32 bit FSX SP1 & SP2.Thanks for any help.Peter Sydney Australia

Sorry, I am niner but I thought with X that one of the patches did that for you. The issue is Vista 32 bit has the exact same limitations as XP 32 bit so that 4 gigs is not being "optimally" used. You will either have to switch to XP 64 bit (ideally) or do a search and see how to modify Vista 32 bit to accommodate the /3gb switch. Not sure why people keep going to 4 gigs with a 32 bit O/S but that is just me.There are a ton of posts on the topic give it a good search.-PaulPrimary RigLiquid CooledIntel C2D E8500@ 3.8Asus P5N32SLI-Plus2 gigs Corsair XMS PC6400 4 4 4 12 @940Dual OC'd XFX 8800GTX @ 2 gigs24 inch Widescreen LCD 16XAA/16XAFDual 19 inch LCD'sRaid-0+1PCPower and Cooling 1k Quad SLIhttp://home.comcast.net/~psolk/3monitorsa.htmlBackup RigAMD 4000 San Diego @ 2.72 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2XFX 7900 GTX Raid-0psolk.jpg

Thanks Paul. With the patches I have, maybe the 3 gbt switchis there for me. Is there anyway I can check to see whetherit is there & is using more than 2 gig? Anyone know?ThanksPeter Sydney Australia

Hey Peter, It might be I would need one of the FSX experts to chime in but before Vista32 can make use of the extra memory you have to tell VISTA, not just FSX about the change.Do a search on vista 3gb aware on google and I would bet $1 that you will get what you need ;)Ha, I win LOL, the first link explains it for you but most of us use /2560 as the /userenvhttp://en.wiki.mcneel.com/default.aspx/McN...dressAware.htmlI am not much help, XP and FS9 LOLCheers,-PaulPrimary RigLiquid CooledIntel C2D E6600 @3.2 gigsAsus P5N32SLI-Plus2 gigs Corsair XMS PC6400 4 4 4 12 @810Dual OC'd XFX 8800GTX @ 2 gigs24 inch Widescreen LCD 16XAA/16XAFDual 19 inch LCD'sRaid-0+1PCPower and Cooling 1k Quad SLIhttp://home.comcast.net/~psolk/3monitorsa.htmlBackup RigAMD 4000 San Diego @ 2.72 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2XFX 7900 GTX Raid-0psolk.jpg

>Is there anyway I can check to see whether>it is there & is using more than 2 gig? Anyone know?Vista 32 bit should utilize over 3GB without doing anything. "System Information" in the "Accessories>System Tools" program folder will give you a list including physical memory recognized by Windows. When running FS in windowed view mode, you can display the task manager with ctrl-alt-del to list processes, including the memory usage for FS.Art

Thanks Art.In my task manager, it says:Physical Memory 3581mbCached 2969mbFree 81mbAnd in the graph window it has shown up to2.3mb memory in use, when I'm doing the bigcomplex flying. Is this OK? It's recognisingmore than 2gig, & I don't need to do anything?Much appreciate your kind help.Peter Sydney Australia

Peter, your physical memory reported is exactly the same as mine. Do you mean 2.3GB in use? If you look in the processes list, it will show how much is being used for FS.I have just let Vista set up paging file size, etc. and am not knowledgable enough to tweak memory usage other than to limit what is running in the background when using FSX.

The /3GB switch has nothing to do with using real memory. This is an urban myth.. :-)
