Need help choosing a power supply.

Featured Replies

Greetings fellow simmers,I have a new Gateway GT5676 running Vista-64 and an AMD Phenom 9600 quad-core processor. It has a 300w power supply that I need to replace in order to power my video card which desires a 500w power supply. I am thinking of getting something greater than 500w to allow for future upgrades. However, I realize power supplies are more complicated than watt ratings alone. I would appreciate any suggestions.Thank you in advance for any help.Bill Worth

Hey Bill,The best I can suggest is not to go cheap on the power supply. I've blown 2 cheap PSU's just within a year, before finally breaking down and buying a good quality PSU. Luckily for me my previous PSU's didnt fry anything else in my system (which can happen!)Anything over 600watts should be fine for a single video card plus some extra case components such as fans. If you wanna get into SLI and or Liquid cooling then of course you would require higher wattage.(something in the 800 range) Generally all the higher watt PSU's are SLI ready. In a nutshell I highly recommend getting a good quality name brand PSU!Regards,ChrisAsus M2N-SLI moboAMD Athlon X26000 dual core cpuNvidia BFG Gforce 8800GTS Graphics card 640MB (single)4 gigs Corsair Twin XMS2 800Mhz ram (3gigs utilized)BFG 650watt PSUThermal Take Big Water 760i liquid cooling system (cpu block only)Windows XP proA couple HDD's, a monitor, keyboard etc.etc.

Hi Bill,Here's what you need: a Hiper Type R 730W Power Supply or even better still, get yourself a Seasonic M12 700W . You can't go wrong. Don't take my word for it, read all the reviews you like on the seasonic and you won't be disappointed but rather convinced!Fadi.
