Case recommendation for the longer video cards?

Featured Replies

My Lian Li is too small to accomdate my HDD's and a 10.5" video card. Your recommendations for a roomy case that is not too big either, nor hugely pricey. Not sure I can answer without knowing which Lian Li case it is - a generic answer would be to either move the HDD caddy through 90 degrees (if you can) or get adapters and place the HDDs up in some unused 5.25" bays...My real reason for replying though (so sorry for the hijack) is your signiture: Please please please tell me whene you got your Mushkin memory - I assume you're talking about the 996620 PC3-16000 here. The Mushkin site says it's not yet available for purchase :( Also, can you really run 4Gb of it at 1T? That's nice! While I'm asking: How does that Cheetah perform in FS compared to say a WD Velociraptor? I heard it was only marginally better but much noisier so I'd love to hear your thoughts...Cheers,Geoff

My Antec P182 can accommodate the 8800GTX and before that, the 3870X2. The HD caddy behind the card has to be removed though. You still have enough space in the caddy at the bottom of the case for 2 HDs and maybe a third.

>a roomy case that is not>too big either, :) That is kind of contradictory these days.I use a Silverstone TJ09 with my long (12"+) 8800GTX card. The Silverstone TJ09 is a long case, but not especially tall, so it's a little different than most towers. Some people don't like the length of it, but there are zero fitment issues with big boards and cards in it. Cooling is good.RhettFS box: E8500 (@ 3.80 ghz), AC Freezer 7 Pro, ASUS P5E3 Premium, BFG 8800GTX 756 (nVidia 169 WHQL), 4gb DDR3 1600 Patriot Cas7 7-7-7-20 (2T), PC Power 750, WD 150gb 10000rpm Raptor, Seagate 500gb, Silverstone TJ09 case, Vista Ultimate 64ASX Client: AMD 3700+ (@ 2.6 ghz), 7800GT

Thanks all, and Rhett for this recommendation. I was looking for just that, deep but not tall, and it was getting too tedious to look thru the zillion cases at newegg for one that fit that description.I will see if there is some way I can maybe move a drive or two, using an adapter to the 5.25" bay as suggested, thank you Geoff as I hadn't thought about that option. I forget the model I have but it's very nice, except for this one issue.QX9650 w/ Retail HSF|ASUS P5E3 Premium WiFi|4GB Muskin Ascent 7-6-6-18 1T DDR3-1600|EVGA 8800GT|Seagate SATA 2 x 2|Seagate Cheetah 15K.x|XP Pro SP2|Vista 64--maybe never to be installed

I don't have 996620, but have this:996601 (2x2GB)Frequency: 1600MHz Latency: 7-7-6-18 Parity: Unbuffered Voltage: 1.85-1.9V Pins: 240 Density > > > Module: 256Mx64 Chip: 128Mx8 When I talked with Mushkin re what the Ascent modules offered, he said they bin them out to guarantee (verbally?!) a 10% overclock above their rated speed at their rated timings, and they have a beefy but compact passive heatsink. They are rock solid, but I only run them at 1600, primarily to get the best latencies as I am running them at 1T and at their rated timings. I do get memory errors when I go much over that, but since they run at 7-7-6-18 at 1T (I think they weren't rated 1T) I was happy enough to not quibble. I see their price hasn't changed much since June. If you end up getting the above modules, I have some timings that I got from Mushkin that work well (with all the other timings, you know . . .)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/194008.jpg>While I'm asking: How does that Cheetah perform in FS compared>to say a WD Velociraptor? I heard it was only marginally>better but much noisier so I'd love to hear your thoughts...I can't say as I haven't used a WD drive since replacing 15 brand new ones at work when they summarily died (about 1/3 of the entire lot) within 2 months of typical business use! I know all drives can have their bad batches, but that was a bit much! I also was attracted to Seagate's 5y warranty. I have 4 15K.x drives with the oldest at about 6 years now, and nary an issue. I am now using their cheap SATA II drives with 5y warranties. I can absolutely confirm the Cheetahs are neither very noisy nor very hot, temp wise. I bought the SCSI's for GigaStudio, for their fast seek time. The new 3GB SATAs (pennies on the dollar by comp) actually perform better in terms of I/O with larger files. I think with today's SATA II's I won't be doing SCSI any longer--don't like the slower boot time!QX9650 w/ Retail HSF|ASUS P5E3 Premium WiFi|4GB Muskin Ascent 7-6-6-18 1T DDR3-1600|EVGA 8800GT|Seagate SATA 2 x 2|Seagate Cheetah 15K.x|XP Pro SP2|Vista 64--maybe never to be installed

I have a 9800 GTX in mine, and it's a Thermaltake Armor Extreme Edition VA8004BWS Black 1.0mm SECC Chassis/ Aluminum Front Bezel ATX Full Tower Computer Case from NewEgg for $159 now. PLENTY of Room leaving ALL items intact. The case moves a drive bay side-by-side with the power supply, which actually mounts sideways. I like it that way, works very well.My previous case, also worked when I removed the extra drive cage. It was an Ultra Mid-Tower, but the 9800 GTX also fit in there also.
