FSX Core i7 mini review

Thanks again, Nick. I called QuietPC and ordered the cooler today. Very nice salesman answered. They don't have the actual retail box in stock yet, but are selling a "kit" as he called it which consists of the Ultimate 120-Extreme, the LGA1366 bracket, and the fan and its plastic mounting bracket. These are all of the parts that come in the "retail" package, just in three separate boxes. The price for the kit is the same as retail, $74.95. Just thought I would let everyone know the status of the coolers there. Now, let the games begin!Jeff
Hey JeffThe first post in this thread may seem a bit heavy but it will get you orientated to the clocking process and it includes the 920, 940 and 965. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showth...ght=nehalem+101This video is a very simplified clocking tutorial using that informationhttp://www.linustechtips.com/how-to/ncix-t...rclocking-guideBut do remember.. you have a 965 so you only need to be concerned with the CPU multipler vCore and the memory multiplier.. your situation is very simplified compared to others because you purchased the extreme CPU and the 1.65v 1600 memory.I will post other sources... I had a link to a simple formula chart and cant seem to find it... looking for it now

Good going, Nick. Thanks. I'll check out both of those tomorrow. Well, I'm glad to know that OCing will be much simpler with the 965. At least that makes the extra bucks seem worthwhile. I'm having someone else build the system up (I guess I'm getting lazy in my older age), but I want to handle the OCing. Memory gets here next Monday and cooler on Thursday so hopefully by the following Monday it'll all be happening. I'm getting FSX, RealTemp, Ultimate Defrag, Prime 95, FS Genesis, GEX, FEX, UTX, MyTrafficX, and CPU-Z. I figure that will be a good start on the software end. I have a Hanns-G 28" monitor. Do you also suggest putting all of this on the C drive with the system software and defragging and placing on outer tracks or a completely separate drive? And what about DirectX 9 vs 10?Jeff

I put FSX on its own drive. I install things like GEX/FEX/ASX on the OS drive because they are just databases and send textures to FSX so keeping those on the OS drive keeps the FSX drive clean. UTX must be installed into FSX, no exceptions. I also format the FSX drive to 64K clusters in order to significantly cut down on fragmentation. The OS drive can not be formatted like that and must remain on a 4K cluster size. and I dont care what anyone says around here.. its a better way to run FSX and anything that cuts down on overhead increases performance. DX10 is a preview.. that means its incomplete. You can switch beween DX9 and DX10 when ever you like. DX10 will allow bloom and higher water reflections with much less hit but otherwise DX9 and 10 basically look the same... bloom and water are visually better in DX10. You will find other problems with it though because it is an incomplete preveiw

What's the performance demand for the OS drive? Velociraptor required, or Raptor, or will Caviar do? Question applies to a Core i7 system - probably 965 overclocked, DDR3 1600, GTX 280. FSX will be on a 300 gb Velociraptor. Thanks!Alan

any one will do for the OS and installed programs.. just make sure its a decent modern SATAII drive

Thanks yet again.More demanding questions will follow as parts arrive...Alan
