FS9 + Windows 7 RC troubles

Featured Replies

Hi all,I'm returning to the FS9 forum after several months of beating my head against a wall trying to make FSX work for me with Win7. Before the upgrade from Vista x64 to Win7 x64, I had finally achieved a fairly consistent 15-60 fps depending on the area, but since Win7 seems not to handle FSX very well, and I'm not willing to give up all of the benefits of Win7 for the headache of Vista, I've decided that FSX just isn't worth the trouble just yet (something sad to say considering I've got a hot rod system which should be perfectly capable of running FSX at blazing speeds... thank you very much MS for this...) and that I will be going back to FS2004. Now, of course this is something that is, as usual, easier said than done, as I've had nothing but trouble trying to get FS9 and all of my scenery set up under Win7 x64. For some reason, the scenery library refuses to update properly, either simply ignoring updates inserted by scenery installers (hit or miss), and sometimes getting stuck in scenery update loops where the program will rebuild the scenery database every time its started, whether or not any changes have been made (this also seems to prevent some sceneries from inserting themselves into the scenery.cfg file... Ultimate Terrain USA is where I noticed this because the installer warns you when FS9 has made changes to its own scenery library). I've tried a full uninstall / reinstall to no avail, and I've tried many different compatibility modes, none of which have changed the outcome...I'm really afraid that if I can't get this mess figured out, I'll have to do a full wipe and downgrade, something which will take me a significant amount of time which I won't have for many months, leaving me high and dry without a flight sim for all of that time... Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, both because I've run out of ideas about how to fix this problem on my own and because a "reasonable" amount of searching through these forums (and others) has not produced any sort of reference to my specific problems. Thanks,Greg

No one knows anything? I know that some people at least have gotten FS9 and Win7 to work together, but it seems that no one wants to speak up...

I assume your query regards "RC" Radar Contact 4.3. You could look into the forum here on AVSIM:http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showforum=135and post your query there. The developer, "jd", has run FSX and RC 4.3 and beta 5 on some versions of Win 7. Like Vista, 64 bit versions require some "special handling" including properties regarding security. I know through a different source that a release candidate of Win 7 is out. Makerwys.exe in the root folder of FS and the .bat file in your RC folder need at least admin properties to run. RC should be installed in its own folder, not under Program Files, because of the restrictions placed in applications under those folders.Make sure for RC you have the latest version of FSUIPC and makerwys.exe from here:http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.htmland check the FSUIPC support forum for anything regarding your situation:http://forums.simflight.com/viewforum.php?f=54

Well I am running FS9 in windows7 RC. Let me tell you, I have some troubles, maybe hardware, maybe software. First of all my computer has 4 Gbyte of memory and Windows 7 reports that only 3 Gb is usable? Next, in the beginning with Vista, I had a lot of troubles with a freezing FS9, I solved it with a remove of GA-traffic. I upgraded Vista to Windows7, not the best choice on the moment. Again I have sometimes a freezing FS9, but until now I haven't a clue. It is probably a memory problem because it always happens when I flying the Suprunov Yak-40, which needs a lot of resources. Another problem which I encountered with Windows7 is that my installed programs listing was empty and I needed to install a freeware "Vista Start Menu" (MS take a good look at it, and learn how to build a user interface) to get access to them. Next: the windows7 update wants to install the renewed drivers of two printers which were once installed in Vista and removed again, but I can't get access to the present installed printer via "Devices and Printers" because this utility freezes. Windows7 has potential, but still contains quirks and bugs, that's why it is still an RC! Maybe there are simmers that can run it without problems but not me! Regarding my past with FS9, Windows XP is still the best OS for Fsimmers.Regards, Hugo

Sorry: I forgot RC meant release candidate in this instance. Some of what I suggested still applies regarding security.

Right now in the process of installing the W7 RC and getting all the system stuff working properly before playing with FS9... perhaps I'll be finding the same problem soo myself! An initial guess would be that it is to do with file access permissions - are you explicitally running FS9 (and any add-on installers) in "Administratore Mode"? Perhaps you could try disabling some of the inbuild security features of the OS (I've not learned how to do this myself yet, but I'm sure it can be done)...

You have a PCI-E graphics card with 1Gb RAM (or two cards with 512Mb each)... It was actually the same with XP in that the 1Gb was not actually available but the difference is that W7 seems to show it more clearly.GEoff

I've been looking through the security settings within my FS9 directory and have been trying to set everything I can find to run in compatibility and admin mode... its how I get things to work right on Vista, but I'm still running into problems with FS9 refusing to properly work with the scenery.cfg file. Now it not only creates odd entries into the file, but it seems to randomly delete whole swaths of entries out of the file. When I looked into the problem, it seems that there are about 5 different versions of the scenery.cfg file with different naming variations in the FS9 directory. It seems like FS9 is just loading them up at random without any real determination to the real one. I've tried deleting the ones that seemed least correct, but it doesn't really fix the problem of my sceneries not showing up into FS9.

I've got UAC completely turned off at the moment simply because it causes more problems than it fixes, but as far as lower level security, I've not really messed with it that much... I may try to see what happens. Perhaps FS9 can't change its own files because of access controls? I still am finding it rather amazing that MS can't even produce an OS where its own software runs without trouble...

Hello,Some of you use the word "upgrade"If you really "upgraded" from Vista to Win 7 .. it's many chances to have problems.I readed on many forums that's preferable (for avoid probs and conflicts) to made a "fresh install" of Win 7 (format .. etc...)Not running Win 7 myself due to hardware limitations.Regards.bye.gif

Mine is a fresh install, I learned a long time ago the fewer layers of problems you have, the better, something that applies even to the much beloved Windows XP. I think though that my problem stems from the interaction between FS9, Win7, and the way each manages files.

I must say that my W7 x64 + FS9 experience has been nothing short of perfect. I never got any of the problems you mentioned. It runs like a dream for me. But this new rig I have is helping also. FSX is a different story though, some work is needed there, but I think video drivers are not mature enough on W7 yet.

You are right about W7 drivers... The have been giving me all sorts of headaches, forcing me to even have to install some in compatibility mode to get them to work. I've been thinking about giving my computer thorough cleaning before going ahead with another FS9 reinstall, but I'm just not that patient.
