June 11, 200916 yr Questions on setting up a 2 PC network for FSUIPC WIDEFS or WIDEFS7.I would like to get ActiveSky and FlightSim Commander onto a client PC.Background:I had a 2 PC Ethernet network several years ago using a ZNET Router. An old PC and a new Dell PC both with Windows XP.Basically, I just used the network for file transfers setting up the new PC.Never used the newwork for Flight Sim.The two PCs were cabled to the router. The router went to a Comcast cable modem. The Comcast cable modem went to the Internet.Every few days I had to power down the Z NET router and Cable modem.Because, as I understand it, the Cable Company would check their system and thinkthere was a problem and reset their modem. I think this generated anew IP address on their modem! Now my router did not know what happened! Then I would have to reset my router and their modem to get the IP addresses set up again.Well, I really do not know what actually was going on.So I just disconnected the network. Now I am thinking about a network using FSUIPC for Flight Sim.The questions:**************So, the question is ... does anyone have this IP Address reset stuffgoing on when hooked to the Cable company?Maybe my ZNET (not an expensive one) router was the problem.Or, is it a common problem and there is a way around it? June 12, 200916 yr Well, if all you need to do is network two computers, you can do so with a multi port switch or router ( as you have done). If the router is not hooked up to the internet, then the isp won't be changing anything. I believe routers work within a given range of addresses, and switching is kind of automatic. Seems that rebooting the router is a common thing. I go for months with no problem, then a couple days in a row, I have to reboot, sometimes. Everyone has their favorite products, but I like Linksys.Bob Bob i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.
June 13, 200916 yr I don't know about the ZNET. Used to have a Belkin, didn't like that much. Now I have a Linksys G with 4 port switch plus wifi access point. I have helped people with DLink and I guess they work but I don't like them.I have seen different theories about cable co and routers but don't know what the truth is. When I had them set up my account they came out and checked their vswr or whatever they do to verify signal strength. On my router, I use the "clone MAC address" to the same MAC as was on my computer when they installed the cable. But your router should be able to use DHCP and get its network IP addr from the cable modem. If you lose it (I can usually tell if my router status page shows the gateway as some invalid address) you should be able to get the DHCP to renew your IP addy.Anyway for wide client, as long as both computers are running tcp/ip, you should be able to just start fs (and see that the server is running) and when you start the client it should connect automatically. Of course you need to set up your home network addresses and firewall so both machines can ping each other. scott s..
June 13, 200916 yr Author Thanks everyone for the information.I said my router was a Z Net ... actually ZONET.Anyway, every few days I had to power down the Z NET router and Cable modem to get the IPADDR sorted.I guess the cable company was changing "its" modem's IP Address. Now the power off cycle to re-sync it all.Just wondering if this type of thing still happens when hooked into the cable syatem?
