White screen when task switching in full screen mode

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I recently followed NickN's advice and upgraded from Windows XP32 to XP64. I followed his instructions to setup FSX correctly and optimize windows to the letter, and to this day no more OOM errors! :( But I have traded one problem for a new one: most of the time whenever I switch to another task (i.e. web browsing, or to see the weather reports in Active Sky Advanced) and switch back to FSX I get a white screen (off white fills the whole screen) I only use full screen , not windowed mode. This is a very annoying situation, and happens regardless of aircraft (default or PMDG heavies or LevelD 767). Per Nick's advice, I can sometimes get the session back by hitting the windows button on my keyboard and switching back on the FSX icon, but this is hit or miss most of the time. Eventually I do get back the session, but its all luck. Now I'd rather have this annoyance vs. OOMs, but I'd like to know if this is common, especially with 64bit os use. I never had this issue with XP 32. I also reinstalled XP 64 to see if the problem went away, and it didn't :( I use Nvidia driver 182.50 (which most of us swear by) and the latest Nhancer module (my system components listed below in my sig). I tried various drivers both old and the current betas, Nhancer off and on, and the problem still persists. I tried every trick I could think off, like deleting the FSX.cfg and letting FSX rebuild it, my xml files are correct, and even tried just FSX with no addons and it still didn't stick. Not sure if this is related to the sound card driver issue discussed in the PMDG forum, since the sound is fine and I don't have any of the texture corruption problems that they seem to be discussing. Just this annoying off white screen in full screen mode.Anyone have this problem consistently, and know of a good workaround?Thank you

I presume you've tried hitting alt+return a couple of times to take it out and back into full screen mode? That usually works for me when FSX won't display after alt tabbing out of it, but that is with an ATI card.Al

Tooltips is always off, and I tried the alt enter trick as well. When I do that the windowed screen is messed up as well.I can live with it, just as long as I don't switch out from the full screen as often. Perhaps I could alt-enter to window mode before I switch apps, but if at all possible I'd like to find out why this is happening to my system and get rid of this bug once and for all. Thanks for your suggestions.

HombreXPI don't see this in Vista 64, even running the same driver series as you.I did used to get a black screen when accessing menus, etc with the 186.xx drivers but that disappeared when I unticked AA in the simRegardsPeterH

hombrexp,The following may help you as I have had exactly the same white screen problems on XP64.I hope this is not another "false dawn" but it may be worth a shot as it worked for me.Here is what I found:Conditions:Same hardware as signature below except Windows XP x64 SP1 instead of Vista SP2.FSX + AccelerationOnly Addons:PMDG 747x & MD11REXLoaded saved MD11 flight.Noticed that time to switch between windowed and full screen is noticeably slower than Vista. After about 5 or 6 switches between windowed and full screen (note: Alt + Enter not Alt + Tab) the window/display went white but the sound continued.Absolutely no corruption of textures just a white screen instead of the black screen.Could not get display back no matter what I did. Then I shut down FSX.Restarted FSX and created a saved "default flight" - Cessna at Seattle.Loaded the saved "default flight" - Cessna at Seattle. Then loaded the presaved MD11 flight on top of it.Flew entire flight without any problems at all.Did many switches between full and windowed modes and accessed the menus many times which would normally cause the problem. Also did the same flight in the 747x (after loading the saved "default flight") which always caused the same problems however this performed flawlessly as well. Also found that frame rates were higher in XP 64 rather than Vista 64.Overall performance was better and smoother.Hoping it's not another false dawn.....PetePS I tried using the DirectX fix in XP64 of lowering the hardware sound acceleration but this did not fix the problem. I also could not find any settings in XP 64 that would allow me to lower the sound settings to say "16bit, 8000 Hz telephone quality" as one can in Vista.

Further to the above.I performed the same flight and it all went without a problem after many switches between full and windowed modes and accessing the menus many times. There were no white screen or any other problems. However, this time I tried instant replay at the end of the flight and the corrupted scenery textures and missing aircraft parts occured. This is the only time I have seen the problem of corrupted scenery textures and missing aircraft parts in XP64.I will try the same flight by using the DirectX fix in XP64 of lowering the hardware sound acceleration to see if this fixes the instant replay issue.Regards,Pete

Have tried the same flight by using the DirectX fix in XP64 of lowering the hardware sound acceleration to see if this fixes the instant replay issue.Again flight went without a problem. No white screens.Instant replay worked for 5 times but then on next instant replay, got the problem of corrupted scenery textures. Not recoverable.Out of ideas for the time being on the instant replay problem.Pete

Hi GuysI am having this same problem and wondering if any of you here have experienced this and may know a fix. Its really annoying as sometimes even if I check the 'Map' function within FSX itself I experience the white screen when returning to the game. If I Alt Tab out I can sometimes get the game back but most times I have to quit completely.I am running Windows XP 64Bit. ATI 5850 CCC 10.4 FSX + Acceleration Track IR + Matrox Triple Head 3840 x 1024 resolution..(Tooltips + Bloom off)Thanks for any help!!Hamish
