June 23, 200916 yr Moderator Since I have gotten ASA I have been really happy with it, much more so than the default FSX weather depiction. The performance has been really good running it on a networked computer, however I think I am starting to overload my memory a bit to much with ASA running along with Ultimate Traffic 2 injecting AI. After long FSX secessions I have been getting some weird anomolies like the 3D cockpit will suddenly get mesed up, planes wings will be vertical going thru the fuselage, text in drop down menues will be blured, etc.So I have begun to think I need to maybe reduce some of the settings in ASA namely cloud layers. What is the FSX default amount of cloud layers that can be drawn? ASA has a number of 0 to 20 clouds layers option. Currently I have it set on 4 layers, maybe I need to back it down to 3?It's weird that I get really good FPS, but after a few hours of flying the LDS767, with lots of cloudy weather, and high amounts of AI, I get the graphic problems. I have checked my temps and they are all in line, so I think in the long run its a problem in my case of running out of memory. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
June 24, 200916 yr Hi,Not really sure what that is in FSX.But with ASA on the client machine, we aren't adding anything to the memory situation. Check Task Manager next time and see what that tells you. Thanks,
June 24, 200916 yr Author Moderator Hi,Not really sure what that is in FSX.But with ASA on the client machine, we aren't adding anything to the memory situation. Check Task Manager next time and see what that tells you. Thanks,Hi Jim. I didn't mean that ASA was adding to the memory situation. I meant it more like the fact that I was enabling to many layers of clouds to be rendered as maybe a source of my problems, not the actual ASA UI.I'm surprised you guys don't know how many layers of clouds FSX and generate on it own. I thought by default the FSX weather engine had a limit of maybe only 3 layers, maybe more. I wonder if anyone would know this, beside the ACES guys.Thanks. September 18, 200916 yr I was looking around to find something on the topic of the number of cloud layers and didn't find much... so, I'll ask the question here. What's the "normal" setting? I have my at max.. 20 layers and things seem to work fine. I saw that some people here have it on 3 ?! Is 20 overkill than? More is batter or not?I'm just a bit confused how these layers work. If people have it on 3 I seriously doubt I need 20. I could gain some performance with lowering that number.. I just don't want almost clear skies because of that or something. September 18, 200916 yr I'm using three cloud layers and find that I have more clouds than blue, by a long shot--when ASA tells the system that there are that many cloud layers to model. Cloud layers are driven by the reported wx, not the other way round. I went up to five (5) layers at one time but felt it was simply overkill and not that much (if any) better in appearance. I don't think I saw any performance change when changing the number of cloud layers but this could be because I didn't take it to an extreme.I wonder how many cloud layers there might be in the real world on any given day? Certainly not 20 I would think. The reported wx I get through ASA and by checking the METARS at my local airport seems to only report three or four levels of cloud coverage, to the best of my memory. September 18, 200916 yr Hi All,Feel free to start new treads instead of pulling up old ones!5 is a good number, but what some users found is that set to 20 produced a better IFR condition with a solid overcast. I am not sure why we have the slider go up to 20.The layers are going to be set by the data so you are not losing or gaining any performance with the slider set at 20. I do have mine set at 20.Thanks,
