I'm sure Virtuali's points are very valid, but where does it all end? You only need to look at Opa's screen shot at http://forum.avsim.net/topic/292777-addon-manager-flying-tips-option/ to see a menu system stuffed with non-default entries added by add-ons.
That's an unfortunate effect of how FS9 was designed: the FS9 SDK never explicitely supported additional menus so, there's no clear standard on where to put them. For example, some airplane developers put their menus at the bottom of the Aircraft menu, FSUIPC creates its own "modules" menu, and everybody else uses the main bar.In FSX is different, because menu creation is officially supported by the SDK so, every 3rd party menu will always end up under the "Addons" main menu.
It would be nice, at least, to have the option to hide all this stuff when not needed . . . after all, in the case of the Addon Manager we only use it once in a blue moon.
I always use FS with the *whole* menu bar hidden...don't see much use of having every single module out there, adding its own version of the menu-hide command. This would create lots of additional complications. Having an option to disable a specific menu, it's very easy when the menu is open. But, how you get it back when you need it, if it's closed ? Having an Addon stealing a key, or taking a precious unused key combination ? It would be far, far, far worse if all addons would start taking keypressess JUST to be able to reactivate their menus after it was made hidden, the chance to have addons having conflicting keypresses it's just too high, and it would result in a big mess, far worse than having the main menu bar full of items.Without mentioning that, a menu should also have a way to *save* its status (hidden or not) betwen sessions so, it's either a file somewhere, or it's a registry setting. Another potential source of problems, you can easily imagine, some addons using a file (some might like an .INI, another one an XML...), another using a registry key, and you might go insane trying to figure out which one used what :( :( So, the simplest solution, is what we have now: don't like to see the menu ? Press ALT, and everything will go away...
