New CPU or graphics card?

Featured Replies

I currently run FS9 with an AMD X2 6000+ (3,1 ghz) and a Nvidia 7900GTX. Most of the time it performs good, but with a lot of clouds the FPS is decreasing quite a lot. I think I should buy a new graphics card for better result, what do you think? Or do you think a new CPU is what I need?

Well, you could go both...You'll be better off getting the GPU. If FS9 is your only oncern for now, go with the Nvidia 9800GT. Get the 512 or 1gig. Something Like THIS

I agree. Go with a new card. I saw a great improvement going to an 8800 GTS 320 from my Nvidia 7900 in FS9.

Thank you.Two more questions:1) Is the 9800GT better than GTS 250?2) How does 9800GT perform in FSX?

1) no2) pretty well
9800GT is equal to GTS250, or the GTS250 is better?

At standard monitor resolutions they are pretty comparable. The GTS may have a small edge if you get a larger monitor with 1920x1080 res etc

Thank you all for helping me! One last question:Is it worth the extra money for a 1024mb card? For FS9? For FSX?

I'd say not for a regular resolution monitor, as in 1280x1024 etcBut if you play other games such as first person shooters, crysis etc it may help with the textures

In Windows XP, stick with the 250 512Mb card or go with a 9088 GTX+ 512, which is basically the same card. The 250/9800GTX+ is better than the 9800GT but not by a whole lot.

What do you think about the ATI HD4870? It is faster/better than GTS250, right? Would HD4870 be a better choice for FS9? But actually, I really want a Nvidia card, because I love nHancer :(

In games other than FS9/FSX the 4870 is most certainly superior to the GTS 250. Not so in FS9/FSX, however. Nvidia cards are just plain better for FS.

Thanks. Finally just want wo make sure that it is worth changing graphics card. As I wrote in an earlier post, my FPS decreases a lot with a high coverage of clouds, for example. And I've noticed that higher AA-settings gives less frames during those situations. Can someone make sure that going from 7900GTX to GTS250 will result in more FPS, in for example those cloud-situations? Or is the CPU (AMD X2 6000+ 3,1ghz) too weak?
