August 7, 200916 yr I think FSX like FS2004 is single thread in which case overclocking the 920 to about the same 4GHz may not produce any noticable extra fps, would that be correct? This is a rather strange question to ask. What does number of threads have to overclocking? Nothing. When you overclock you gain some performance regardless of number of threads. Michael J.

It does make for a smoother sim, especially in areas of complex scenery. The improved instruction pipelining in the i7 makes for better throughput than the Core2Duo at the same clock speed, and the triple-channel memory bandwidth is considerably higher as well.If I run my i7-975 at 3.6 GHz it is considerably faster (and smoother) than my Core2Duo X6800 extreme edition at the same clock speed.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO Bob Scott | President and CEO, AVSIM Inc ATP Gulfstream II-III-IV-V Sys1 (MSFS20+24/XPlane12+11): AMD 9800X3D, water 2x240mm, MSI MPG X670E Carbon, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, nVidia RTX4090FE Alienware AW3821DW 38" 21:9 GSync, 2x4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2x2TB Samsung 990 SSD, EVGA 1000P2 PSU, 12.9" iPad Pro Thrustmaster TCA Boeing Yoke, TCA Airbus Sidestick, Twin TCA Airbus Throttle quads, PFC Cirrus Pedals, Coolermaster HAF932 case Sys2 (P3Dv5/v4): i9-13900KS, water 2x360mm, ASUS Z790 Hero, 32GB GSkill 7800MHz CAS36, ASUS RTX4090 Samsung 55" JS8500 4K TV@60Hz, 3x 2TB WD SN850X 1x 4TB Crucial P3 M.2 NVME SSD, EVGA 1600T2 PSU Fiber link to Yamaha RX-V467 Home Theater Receiver, Polk/Klipsch 6" bookshelf speakers, Polk 12" subwoofer, 12.9" iPad Pro PFC yoke/throttle quad/pedals with custom Hall sensor retrofit, Thermaltake View 71 case, Stream Deck XL button box Sys3 (DCS/P3Dv4/ATS/ETS): AMD 7800X3D, MSI MPG X870E Carbon, Noctua NH-D15S, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, EVGA RTX3090 Alienware AW3420DW 34" 21:9 GSync, Corsair HX1000i PSU, 4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2TB Samsung 970Evo Plus, TM TCA Officer Pack, Saitek combat pedals, TM Warthog, TM RS300 FF wheel/pedals, Coolermaster HAF XB case
August 7, 200916 yr Hey BobWill your i7-975 allow pretty much any setting and any complex aircraft (PMDG-747) with complex scenery with smooth framerates above 15 or so? I am hoping to upgrade to an i7 with that being my last CPU upgrade for FSX.RH
August 8, 200916 yr Author Yeahme with PMDG 747, TRaffic X at 70% sliders almost maxed out and at heavy traffic airport like heathrow I get about 11 fps, I want more without reducing traffic, maybe ultimate traffic is better and will impact less on fps. I am hoping to upgrade to an i7 with that being my last CPU upgrade for FSX.RHWith the i7 at 4.4 GHz I can fly a complex acft into complex scenery with generally very few issues. I set my traffic sliders in UT-II at 60% commercial and 35% GA (for aesthetics as much as performance). However there are still a few trouble spots...my ultimate torture test is to take off northbound from KJFK (FSDreamTeam), fly a left turn over the airfield, and head direct for Manhattan (default) and KLGA (ImagineSim). With a complex bird like the PMDG MD-11, the combo of buildings, ground traffic, air traffic at LGA and EWR, and weather can bring even the mighty 975 down into the low teens. My old test flight, from KSEA over the city of Seattle, and then back, runs with the MD-11 locked at 25fps on the i7 even in heavy rain.I run with scenery set to extremely dense now...the only real performance killer the i7 can't summarily brush aside is AI traffic at very high settings, and that only in areas of unusually dense traffic.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO Bob Scott | President and CEO, AVSIM Inc ATP Gulfstream II-III-IV-V Sys1 (MSFS20+24/XPlane12+11): AMD 9800X3D, water 2x240mm, MSI MPG X670E Carbon, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, nVidia RTX4090FE Alienware AW3821DW 38" 21:9 GSync, 2x4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2x2TB Samsung 990 SSD, EVGA 1000P2 PSU, 12.9" iPad Pro Thrustmaster TCA Boeing Yoke, TCA Airbus Sidestick, Twin TCA Airbus Throttle quads, PFC Cirrus Pedals, Coolermaster HAF932 case Sys2 (P3Dv5/v4): i9-13900KS, water 2x360mm, ASUS Z790 Hero, 32GB GSkill 7800MHz CAS36, ASUS RTX4090 Samsung 55" JS8500 4K TV@60Hz, 3x 2TB WD SN850X 1x 4TB Crucial P3 M.2 NVME SSD, EVGA 1600T2 PSU Fiber link to Yamaha RX-V467 Home Theater Receiver, Polk/Klipsch 6" bookshelf speakers, Polk 12" subwoofer, 12.9" iPad Pro PFC yoke/throttle quad/pedals with custom Hall sensor retrofit, Thermaltake View 71 case, Stream Deck XL button box Sys3 (DCS/P3Dv4/ATS/ETS): AMD 7800X3D, MSI MPG X870E Carbon, Noctua NH-D15S, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, EVGA RTX3090 Alienware AW3420DW 34" 21:9 GSync, Corsair HX1000i PSU, 4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2TB Samsung 970Evo Plus, TM TCA Officer Pack, Saitek combat pedals, TM Warthog, TM RS300 FF wheel/pedals, Coolermaster HAF XB case
August 8, 200916 yr Low teens is not bad. Thanks for the info! I suppose we will have to wait for the 32nm version of the i7 Extreme coming in Q1 of 2010. Hopefully, that will be able to crank up to 5Ghz. RH
August 8, 200916 yr SP1/SP2 introduced multithread to terrain, ground textures and autogen. All physcial cores past the primary core will be accessed by FSX for those itemsIts a shame they did not do the same for AI traffic because AI is a primary perf killer in FSX to any CPU. Since AI is addressed to the first core of the proc with the rest of the program being run it will continue to be the achilles heel of FSX to processors for some timeSystems that use a quad core with the right CPU speed enjoy a clearer, sometimes higher scenery slider, smoother flight

August 9, 200916 yr By the very definition all Microsoft Windows programs are multi-threaded... that's how the OS is able to run multiple programs at the same time, and not cause the mouse to freeze up on you :)And when it comes to video games... you'll find that us programmers will avoid the overhead of threading entirely.. and just run different processes on another CPU with entirely seperate memory address... not really done for PC games because there just aren't enough real independant cores.Just remember threading takes up at least 10% extra computing power... you need that 10% for FSX under every circumstance. :) But then again MSFS was written by NOOBS who are all unemployed now for good reason!

August 9, 200916 yr That's not multithreading, that's multitasking.Correct but don't expect that AVN8tr would comprehend this. This kid is just clueless. Michael J.
August 10, 200916 yr duh whats multıthreadıng... I used ıt because the orıgınal poster used ıt... what does threadıng have to do wıth Wındows we use dıspatch/ event processing in the windows world. Unlike Unix we don't wait for timeslices, we wait for triggers. If you weren't such a troll and didn't feel threatened by someone who actually knows what he's talking about, you would have pointed that out! But you didn't.
