Fatal Cessna L-19E Crash Released 25 Years Later

Featured Replies

The Cessna was at or very close to ceiling altitude (12,000') with a summer density (13,000') in mountainous terrain. The pilot waited for close rising terrain in front and on both sides before trying to bank a U-turn to head back the way he came. He banked in excess of 45 degrees. This resulted in eventually stalling and impacting the trees and ground completely inverted, killing both himself and a passenger. The plane wasn't found for three years. For the purpose of collecting info for the forest service, he had mounted a VHS recorder in the cockpit, thus capturing his final moments and mistake(s) prior to the crash. The tape was allowed by the family to be used for training pilots only, but the "moratorium" expired after 20 years and now the video is public domain. The link below describes in detail the whole story, although I have doubts about the VHS tape hanging in the trees for three years and then being repaired for viewing. That just sounds far fetched. Video of crash and moments leading up to it. The turn and eventual crash takes place starting around 6:20. I didn't find it graphic, as there is no screaming or anything of that nature (visually or audibly), just the pilot telling the pax, "Ronnie", to hang on. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=316_1249535759Crash info and NTSB link: http://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=37640Short version of just the few seconds prior to turn and crash:http://www.alexisparkinn.com/photogallery/...ort-Version.wmv

This is a popular video when teaching about mountain flying and human factors in flight. This shows that you should only fly at a mountain if you can see to the other side. Also turn away from the canyon walls and not towards them.

that's just too high an altitude to be flying in a light single engine airplane. you have no room for error, can't climb more than a few hundred feet a minute to avoid anything

Also the engine didn't sound like it was leaned properly.
