August 13, 200916 yr Hi guys,I'm just wondering about FSX on i7 920 and 6gb triple channel memory in terms of performance, running on 64bit XP. I know this chip has been around for a while now and lots of you might be running FSX on it. I'm a long time FS9 user but I'm willing to try to switch if this box will handle the pressure... I'm looking to fly airliners most of the time with full WOAI, payware a/c and airports. How's the experience? Thanks! Jacek G. August 13, 200916 yr If you do decide to move to FSX myself and I'm sure other i7 920 users will say overclock it. @ stock speeds the 920 is simply just ok handling FSX. Once overclocked you should see better FPS and a smooth flight overall. Especially since you plan on flying airliners. I can avg 20-25 FPS w/ REX, GEX, UTX, and PMDG MD-11. With all of this and at a payware airport like KLAS and UT2 for traffic, I average 8-14 FPS. Sucks but its not 2 bad. I still bounce back to FS9 every few flights just to see how my PC and eat it alive!! Christopher Edwards

I have a 920 overclocked to 3.8 with air and I run at temps super cool and not even close to max. I run it with triple 6 gig to and get about 24 to 60 and sometimes higher even with the most demanding payware aircraft, and I also run UT2 traffic at 75 commercial and 65 GA. You cannot go wrong unless you want to drop a few more paychecks.
August 13, 200916 yr Author Nice. Thanks for the input. I've ran FS9 on this box for almost a year, it runs like a champion but I think it's time to move on. If anyone has a P6T motherboard running this chip, I could use some help with overclocking. I already have the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme fan but I'm running on the stock speeds. I'm totally lost when it comes to setting the memory speeds etc. Jacek G. August 13, 200916 yr Author why not vista x64? a much better osWaiting for W7 release. I'm not planning on putting lots of addons to the FSX as I'll be reinstalling the OS in November. Jacek G. August 14, 200916 yr Parts in my sig run fsx pretty well in less complex aircraft. Ohare and Vegas with FSDT airport addons and 60% sliders on ut2 I get about 20-30 fps in my dodo 206 with the 20 side at ohare and the 30 side at vegas. Major airports in heavies with sliders in ut2 above 50% I wouldn't expect to get more than 15-20fps if your scenery sliders are 3/4 or higher. I have pretty much lost faith in fsx ever running at a solid 30fps with all the eye candy turned on and ut2 at max. The ai is really what kills the frame rate for me. Without any ai i can pull a solid 30fps in NYC or any other major city. Enable that ut2 or WOAI and instantly the fps drops in half. The sim is just too bloated and full of bad code unfortunately. It wouldn't matter if you threw a cray at it. It would still run like crap with lots of addons and sliders high, I am convinced.
August 18, 200916 yr Howdy:Well, I have an i7 950 with Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Not sure if this helps, but I've been happy for the most part investing in a new system. That said, I was hoping to get a lot better performance out of FSX - it's pretty good, but I was wanting better than 20-30 FPS at hub airports with UT2 and REX2.0. I do have my FSX sliders at high settings though. I'm pretty much of the opinion that if I want to dial back sliders, I might as well max out FS9 and be an FSGod, which I still do often :( . (50-60 FPS at KLAX and EDDF with WOAI, and lots of custom RetroAI) All things being equal, I'm still happiest in FS9.I fly the PMDG MD-11 and Digital Aviation F100/F70 & Wilco 777 payware in FSX & FS9. August 18, 200916 yr Author Overclocked 920 to 3.8GHz and so far I'm happy. Running FSX with UTX, GEX, REX and a couple of add-on airports. At FSD ORD I'm getting 27-30fps on the ground in the default 737 and A321. I'm really curious to see how much more the performance will decrease if I'll buy some payware jetliner, I'm actually a little scared to make a purchase. Jacek G. August 18, 200916 yr Just built two new systems for my brothers. The best bang-for-the-buck is the 920. I have them OC'd to keep the temps in the low 60's, for the time being. If I have a problem during the burn-in it won't be the OC. The only problems I have had was a DOA MB with a dead memory slot 1A and the Corsair GT memory. Newegg replaced the MB and the memory was recalled. Both systems have stock air coolers and Vista64 which uses the memory better. NickN's OC settings are the best for the 920/P6T. Once set, you only need to change the BLCK Freq to change the CPU speed. All sliders are full right, except traffic 80% and water low 2x. The FSX Limiter allows you to use the latest video drivers without the spiking, NV as well as ATI.Nice to see FSX finally run as it was intended.DaveNew System No.2:Same as No.1 except:Intel Core I7 975 Quadcore 3.3Ghz @ 3.8GhzNew System No.1:Intel Core I7 920 Quadcore 2.66Ghz @ 3.6GhzAsus P6T DLX V2 X58 1366, BD Combo Plextor B310SA6GB (3x2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR3 1866C7GTHIS ATI 4890 1GB, Samsung 24", Saitek X-52 PROLogitech Z680 5.1 Speakers, G15 Keyboard, G5 MouseThermaltake Element S Case, Corsair 850TX PSUC: Intel 80GB SSD w/Vista Home 64D: WD 300GB Velocity Raptor w/FSX, F4AFE: WD 1TB Caviar Black w/DataOld System:Dell XPS 720 H2CIntel Quad Core Extreme QX6800 2.93 @ 3.73GHz4GB (2x2GB) Corsair Dominator EPP 8500C5D FSB 800MHz @ 1066MHz2x160GB WD SATA Raptors, Sound Blaster X-FiNvidia 2x8800GTX 768MB SLI, Dell 2407WFP PanelXP driver: 169.21, Vista driver: 169.25Logitech Z680 5.1 Speakers, G5 Mouse, Saitek X52C: WinXP Media Edition SP3 (SATA 0) w/ Internet/AV/Office/FS9/F4AFD: Vista SP2 (SATA 1) (Dual Boot) w/FSX3DMark06: 17,018/6992/7123/5667
August 18, 200916 yr Recently O/C'ed my 920 to 3.6GHz and for the first time ever I can sim in the Level D + TrackIR in 30-40fps. The o/c has made all the difference for me, turning 10-15fps into 30-40, and allowing me to start purchasing addons for FSX and using FSX exclusively. Stock 920 on setup below was not playable. August 19, 200916 yr I'm curious as to what sort of cooling you guys are using. Is anyone using the stock Intel heatsink? Or did you go with a 3rd party fan?- Martin My site: www.martinstrong.com/FS_Project.htm

August 19, 200916 yr Noctua NH-U12P. It's enormous. Plus the Antec case I have has a 200mm ehxaust fan out the top right next to the Noctua which hauls air through at a huge rate. August 19, 200916 yr I use the Prolimatech Megahalems with a danger den 1600rpm 120mm fan. Absolutely by far the best air cooling setup I have ever used. It runs about 4C cooler than any other cooler I have tried but most importantly it recovers by FAR faster than any other cooler I have ever tried. Under fsx load at 4ghz I hit high 60's but it returns to 40c idle within a minute after I exit the game. All the other coolers I have tried take 3-5 minutes to return to idle temps after load. It is also one solid installation. Great cooler.
