REX2 for FSX?

Featured Replies

Hello all,I have been out of the FSX scene for a few months and now that I am installing it again on my PC, I was wondering what is up with REX2? Is it worth it? By using REX2, I don't need to use ASA anymore? Or do I still need to use a 3rd party weather generator such as ASA?Thanks for any insight.

Hi,REX looks great, I just had it installed yesterday and so far everything looks and feels great. I do however fly either the default 737 or A321, I did not manage to purchase any payware a/c yet. For testing I've set the default weather to stormy but with REX2 textures, everything looked phenomenal!I do however have one complaint, it takes a while to download, unpack and install textures to FSX, just a warning. I can live with that I guess. I wish they've placed the d/l files on a fast file server with a decent transfer rate connection though.I did not have enough time to test the weather engine's accuracy but I'm enjoying what I'm seeing so far. I think I'll pass on ASA for now and fly with REX and maybe put that extra money into some payware jetliner.Enjoy!

Thanks for the reply, Drumcode... Ok, from what I gather, you don't need ASA if you are going to use REX2... My next question would be, do I need to install addons such as Ground Environment X and Ultimate Terrain X? Or does REX2's textures replace them aswell, so no need to install these 2 addons.I want to make sure, so I can make a nice optimized installation of FSX, without addons becoming redundant to one another.

Efrain, you don't have to install GEX and UTX but I would highly recommend doing so. I have also switched to FSX just within this past week and I am not sorry for purchasing GEX and UTX. REX is primarly for weather enhancment, while UTX and GEX is replacing ground textures and mesh.

Gotcha! I have both GEX and UTX, so I will just install these first and then install REX2 last, as soon as I purchase it. :-) Thanks again, buddy.

Don't forget to defrag after installing. The installation can make a big mess and hurt your optimum performance. Other then that you won't be disappointed.

Since I already owned FEX I was unsure of weather or not to dive in and buy REX 2.0. I wasn't sure whether it would be worth it. I am sucker for realism so Some of the photos of clouds and water textures looked amazing. Since It did not appear as GEX Europe was coming out soon I decided to buy it. Over all I am impressed. I still use ASA for weather. I have not used REX much as the weather engine. The clouds are definitely nice and the water is pretty amazing. There are also some sharp lines when textures meet int he ocean that is a bit annoying. This may be addressed in a patch. Over all though I wouldn't say that it is over top better than FEX. It is more like now I have more options available to me. Also the 4096x4096 textures seem to have a slight hit on my machine, but that is to be expected, they do look good. I am sure when I get my next computer they will run perfect. Overall I am happy.

How about overcasts? Do we now have a SOLID overcast layer? By that I mean, that you can be flying into an area where an overcast is being forecasted but as you fly into it, you can still see the ground.

Much better in that department vs. FS9 from what I saw so far. I think I'd like to hear from other people too as I didn't see all that much yet. I believe the best layer of overcast clouds I saw was in FS2000, you could not see the ground at all, but it was a looong time ago and the clouds didn't look what they are today.

Yea, that is one of my pet peeves. The same with the one where you are flying into an overcast and as soon as you are above it, the overcast is gone and all you can see is land till your vision permits. If these two things are solved, then I will by REX2 right away.
