Fs9 Format OS - Windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit?

Featured Replies

Dear Simmers,Ok Finally after reading your advices also read some posts, I decided to go for Windows 7 Ultimate ( As I'm fomatting my PC). Now my question is shall I go for the 64 Bit or 32 Bit? As I really need to make 100% use of my PCMy specs are Intel Core 2 Quad, Asus P5NT-Deluxe Mobo, BFG 8800 GTX OC, 150 GB WD HD,Sound Blaster Xfi fatality pro, 4 GB RAM.I'm awaiting your answers :)Regards,Cpt Zammit

A couple of years ago I would have said stick with 32bit to avoid driver issues if you don't want to deal with them. But now adays everything has a 64 bit driver and I would say def go for 64 bit, esp if you plan on using FSX or other memory intensive programs. If you have older PC programs or printers, etc I would say check to make sure, but since win7 didn't come out yet, there wouldn't be drivers available.

Well...my guess is to go for x64. I run WIN7 RTM x64 Ultimate with FS9 with a load of add-ons and after fixing the >2GB option in the fs9.exe file itself, I ran the PMDG MD-11 with a lot of scenery and stuff on 1920x1200 and used 3,17GB RAM...no hickups, no CTD or OOM (see my topic in the WIN7 section http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=259223)But frankly I've been running x64 on Vista also and X64 on XP. I've got the RAM and although FS will remain (deep inside) a 32bit application you won't have to mind about large RAM consumptions or tweaks like the /largeadressaware and the userva=2560 setting.

Hi,I installed Win7 32bits for the reason that FS9 is not supporting x64 anyway and runs thus in 32bits emulation mode. Also it seemed a few add-ons don't like 64bits at all, causing some issues(I can't tell for sure though, because I haven't tried 64bits)Although I have 6GB RAM, the 3GB that is available for FS9 in 32bit is more than enough. On another partition I run Win7 x64 and there I have 6GB available, but that just my 'normal' OS, not used for FS.Egbert

Oh this is so wrong.First of all: FS9 ITSELF doesn't support 64bits, that's true. There is no "emulation" mode. 64 natively supports 32 and 64 bit, and everything is working normally.I wouldn't even dare to say "few" addons, its more like one or two addons. Those are RealityXP gauges and something else... I have a huge install with LOTS of paywares and freewares, and never ever had a problem with any of them since I put XP64 on my system.Using 6GB of RAM with 32bits, especially for FS9, is something like running a Ferrari with standard 195cm tires...If you use 64bits, why don't you simply run FS9 from there and be done with it? Only reason might be that one or two addons, if you really use them. That FS9 can't use more than 3GB is also not correct. It can and it will if it needs to (up to 4GB) - I have seen here usages over 3GB. 32bit would OOM at those numbers...My 2 cents.

You're two cents makes sense. I thought all this 64-bit ignorance was gone! It's been covered extensively in the forums.Go X64, that way you can use that 4GBs!

Yup, that's what I said in my posting as well...My FS9 used about 3,2GB RAM and didn't look like it would OOM or CTD (eg no stutters or so).Go x64!
