Active Sky Advanced Question?

Featured Replies

Presently for my weather I use FSMeteo for FS9 and the FSX default weather for FSX. In the past I also used Cris Clouds in FS9 but since my curent upgrade to an i7 975 CPU and 64 bit system did not reinstall them. I have debated upgrading to Active Sky for years but have really never been too picky or critical relative to clouds so I have procrastinated (Something I am very good at). However, particularly with my new system one item does bug me. My home area is in West Virginia and particularly during this time of year there are a multitude of low level clouds hanging in between the mountains. The thing I don't like is that under these conditions, the clouds below make it look like the dead of winter and everything is covered with snow.Would Active Sky Advanced significantly improve this image? A second question would be is there any problem with Active Sky on a Windows XP Pro 64 bit system? Thanks:RTH

One of the benefits of flying with Team AVSIM during the Flight Sim Around-The-World race is getting to share this great hobby with a lot of others that also have a passion for flight sim. During my first year in the race, I was introduced to Active Sky by another team member. I had read about it and looked at it, but getting that input from a real person with just as much interest in the simulation of flight was highly beneficial. As a result, I ended up getting Active Sky and have been pleased. I am running Active Sky 6.5 and FS9 on an E7300 at 3GHZ. I am sure your i7 system would have no problems. There were some teammates that had Active Sky advanced and had some issues with wind shear and turbulence, but I can't elaborate. If you ever have any interest in getting online and flying with Team AVISIM, let me know.

I think I'm going to stick with the default weather for the race. I've found that Active Sky will get you into trouble sometimes, like when I was trying to descend in my new J41 the other day I had the stall warning going off at one stage, and a couple of seconds later I was in overspeed and I crashed before I had a chance to take action. Active Sky is fun when you're not depending on the outcome, but I'm not going to risk crashing during the race just for the sake of making the weather look good.

highmike - was that Active Sky advanced or Active sky 6.5? I think Harv and Bry were having some dramatic wind changes and upsets in Advanced

It was ASX for FSX, I haven't upgraded to AS Advanced yet.
