September 16, 200916 yr I flew into CYYJ last night and asked the stock FS9 ATC to direct me to parking, not to the stand. I turned on the progressive taxi and followed it to where ATC wanted me to park. I pulled my aircraft into the parking spot and the little pink arrow disappeared, or so I thought. So I then setup my aircraft to fly to CYVR. When I opened the window to ask for taxi clearance the ATC text still had "Turn Off Progressive Taxi" displayed. I taxied my aircraft forward about 15 feet and the progressive taxi arrow appeared again! Now this happens periodically and at different airports and was wondering if anyone knows why and how to fix it. The main issue being that you cannot receive taxi for takeoff instructions until you successfully park...at least as far as I know.Mark
September 16, 200916 yr I think FS looks at your aircraft position vs center of parking spot to determine if aircraft is "parked" or "taxiing in". You might need to use the "go to airport" and pick the parking spot to get your aircraft close enough, in particular if there isn't a taxi center line (or T in FSX) to clue you where you need to stop. I don't think heading matters. It can be a problem for AI as well. If there is a tight turn before the parking spot AI will often fail to follow the taxiline and not get into the center of the parking spot.scott s..
September 16, 200916 yr Author Thanks Scott. There are a number of really tight parking turns at Don Grovestien's CYYJ. I did go back and forth between the parking lines, on the parking lines, and around the parking lines. The parking areas, (near the tower), are so small that it seems that aircraft would have their wings overlapping if they parked next to each other.Do you happen to know which part of the aircraft FS9 uses to indicate where and when the aircraft is parked...(ie, the front tire, center of gravity etc). It such a show stopper when you've planned a bunch of hops and cannot takeoff after landing at the very first one.Mark
September 16, 200916 yr Straight out of the Aircraft Container SDK Offset (in feet) of the aircraft's reference datum from the standard Flight Simulator center point, which is on the centerline The best gift you can give your children is your time.
September 17, 200916 yr Author Thanks Joe. I did read that bit in the SDK but didn't know if that was actually what was being used for parking the beast. The issue still is why I couldn't find the parking spot and what to do about it. I'm beginning to wonder if somehow the lon/lat actually translate farther back onto the grass or on a fence or something. On a side note, I didn't know that there was a version 5 out for Don's airport. I have been using 4.1 for awhile now so I went ahead and installed it. I'll see if that makes a difference, however, this issue appears at other airports too...but only periodically. It also happens at CCC KSBA from time to time as well as others. Mark
September 17, 200916 yr Mark,I wonder if this might have something to do with the aircraft radius of the parking spot. Are you flying GA, tubes ?It is possible that the designer set the radius for the parking spot small so AI would not use it.You could check this with Afcad.A word of caution concerning Afcad. If the file was made with AFX it might include taxi signs and/or excludes that might get lost if the file is opened with Afcad. I suspect you will be OK as long as you don't save any changes, just open the file and close it. Just to play it safe I have gotten into the habit of making a copy of all addon Afcads on my desktop before I open them and then copy them back into the sim after I close the Afcad.Hope this helps (and isn't too confusing, I'm kinda tired right now),Joe The best gift you can give your children is your time.
September 17, 200916 yr Author It does help thank you. AFX files should be opened with the version from Flight1, or so I've read. I found an interesting tid bit on Don's web site and it reads as follows...http://members.shaw.ca/cyyj2007/"FS9 and FSX use different algorithms to assign parking to AI. FS9 assignments are based on the "model radius" which is embedded in the AI aircraft .mdl file, while FSX uses half the "wing-span" entry in the relevant aircraft.cfg file rounded up to the nearest full metre. So, for consistent operation of the supplied AI in CYYJ (2009), it was necessary for me to "fiddle" with the model radius and/or "wing_span" of certain AI. Consequently, if you use your own AI aircraft, you may find them parking in unexpected places. Appendix "A" to the User Manual identifies for each AI aircraft supplied the values I used for these two parameters. If your aircraft don't park as expected, you'll either have to modify their parking control parameters or modify the "afcad" by changing the radii of the parking spots. Should you undertake the latter, please note that the markings on the main terminal apron are hand-drawn to match their real-life counterparts and will not be affected by changes to the "afcad"."
September 17, 200916 yr Hi,The simple thing to do is reset ATC. The disadvantage is that this reloads all AI aircraft.1. Choose World/Map2. Change the heading by one degree.3. Click OK.Now the ATC takeoff options should be available.Hope this helps, Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
September 18, 200916 yr Author Thanks, I will try that if I have to. Another option is to disregard ATC, taxi over to the nearest runway, and simply take off. It's just not that much fun blatantly breaking the rules...or is it? ATC will allow me to tune into their departure frequency once I'm out of the airspace of the airport. Both ways are good workarounds but would like to find a solution so the FAA doesn't pull my ticket :) Mark
