FS9 Gauge Challenge

Featured Replies

Hello, Fellow FS9 Simmers. (The last "Real Simulation" FS from Microsoft.)I have a challenge for all you top gauge developers. I have been searching for digital fuel gauges on the web, and to my amazement, there are none. I am designing a mini-panel to go with IFDG's Airbus A319. I am creating it to fit well with a commenly used panel for the A319. I wanted to use digital fuel gauges, since a lot of the gauges are digital. The 3 fuel tank gauges are digital, however, they are inside one of the main glass gauges. I have not got into gauge designing yet and I know a lot of you out there have. I use several beautiful gauges designed by many of you.I already created a small display panel for these gauges, (Left, Center & Right tanks), but then discovered I had no digital fuel gauges for the panel. My challenge.....Who of you great gauge designers wants to be the first to create separate, fully adjustable digital fuel gauges that can be used for any jetliner out there and the user simply has to make simple adjustments or maybe none at all, to be able to use them for any jet...depending on how many tanks the jet has and the number of gallons each tank holds?Example: Some jets have 2 tanks and the user would just use gauge #1 and #2. Some jets have 3 tanks and the user would use gauge #1, #2, and #3....and so on. You get the picture. Depending on the jet model the gauges were put in, the user could tell each gauge the default number of gallons at full capacity for each tank. These gauges would be so cool to have. I believe everyone out there would love to have them. So, there is the challenge. Who is going to step up to the plate and create something as wonderful as this for all simmers?I only wish I had the talents to do this. My speciality is re-designing airports to look as real as possible.Happy Simming to all, :( Michael aka [email protected] (Communication Welcome)

Scripting digital displays in XML is a trivial task. Visit the Aircraft and Panel Design form and search for such information. All that's needed is notepad.exe and a few minutes of time.

Hi Bill,This may be trivial to some, but to those who have never done it, It might be quite a task. I just thought some with lots of experience creating gauges could whip out what I'm after a lot faster than it would take me to research and learn how to do gauges. Someday I plan on delving into this portion of FS, but for now I'm too busy learning GMAX and how to build scenery object and annimate them. I'm also very busy Re-Doing 6 local airports which, when I'm finished, will be more real than anything anyone else has out there on these airports, most of which no one has ever done anyway.Regards, :( Michael

Michael, Just out of curiosity what airports are you working on and will you be making themavailable to the simming community?

Sorry, not to be rude, I'm not going to post which airports...But, I will be making them available to all simmers out there. They will be uploaded to AvSim when I'm done. Send me an email to [email protected] and I'll send you a response as they get uploaded.

Why have there always got to be smart asses out there. The project this refers to is a mini-panel I'm creating that many simmers will get plenty of enjoyment from using. This is not a "Give a man a fish" thing. This is called a joint effort and credit will be given where credit is do, so you can just keep your immature comments to yourself. I believe in fellow simmers working together and sharing their knowledge and experience with each other as millions of other simmers believe. Evidently, your not one of those.

Hi Bill,This may be trivial to some, but to those who have never done it, It might be quite a task.
Create a new sub-folder in your FS's ..\Gauges folder, and name the new folder Digital Fuel GaugesCopy/paste this XML script to a blank notepad.exe file, then save it to your ..\Gauges\Digital Fuel Gauges folder, naming it LeftMain.xml
<Gauge Name="MainLeft" Version="1.0"> <Element Name="Transparent Background">	<Rectangle Width="90" Height="20" FillColor="#000000" Bright="Yes"/> </Element> <Element> <Visible>(A:Electrical master battery,bool)</Visible> <FormattedText X="90" Y="22" Bright="Yes" FontSize="20" Font="Quartz" Color="Orange" Adjust="Left" VerticalAdjust="Center"> <String>%((A:Fuel tank left main quantity, gallons))%!4.2f!</String> </FormattedText> </Element></Gauge>

Make a copy of the file, change every instance of "left" to "right", and save it as MainRight.Make another copy changing every instance of "left" for "center", and save it as MainCenterNow you have three digital displays on a transparent background which you may place anywhere you like, and "size to fit" as required.gaugeX0=Digital Fuel Gauges!MainLeft, x,y,w,hgaugeX1=Digital Fuel Gauges!MainRight, x,y,w,hgaugeX2=Digital Fuel Gauges!MainCenter, x,y,w,hYou can easily change the Font and Color to whatever you like:Font="Quartz" Color="Orange"Font="Arial Narrow" Color="White"If you have any questions, please ask them in the "MSFS Aircraft and Panel Design Forum ..."

Actually, I think Bob was trying to subtly remind me (Fr. Bill) that in this instance perhaps I should "give... a fish," rather than trying to "teach... to fish." At least, that's how I interpreted it. :(

Well no, the other way 'round actually. And teach you did. Bravo for that. For those scratching their heads and saying "huh??" it's a sideways reference to the old parable:"Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day.Teach a man to fish, and he'll eat for the rest of his life."CheersBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

Give a man a fish and he wil eat for a dayTeach a man to fish andHe will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.DouglasHere is a gauge set I made for the default 737, basic but functions.

Well no, the other way 'round actually. And teach you did. Bravo for that. For those scratching their heads and saying "huh??" it's a sideways reference to the old parable:"Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day.Teach a man to fish, and he'll eat for the rest of his life."Sorry Bob for the misunderstanding. I guess I didn't read that one very well. Yes, I've heard the saying, but it just didn't register that way for some reason. Thanks Fr. Bill for the .xml code. I've got a lot to learn in that category. I will copy the code and start playing with it just to try and teach myself a thing or to.Right now, Ernie Alston is working with me on some gauges that we can make very flexible and attractive and make available for everyone out there to use. You all can look forward to a nice package put together in the future. What I'm aiming at is something that can be very user friendly and simple to adjust and use in any airliner. Looks like Ernie is already off to a good start. I'm going to work with him get something nice put together. Thanks to all for your help.Regards
