October 16, 200916 yr Have I missed something about engaging the AP. Every time I engage during a climb, the plane goes nose up and I have to disengage and push the nose down to regain airspeed. I"m Nav capture mode and IAS selected. Thanks for the trick here. Have not burnt out an engine in weeks - but now the passengers are getting kind of green around the gills... This is the turboprop. Thanks.

October 16, 200916 yr You know, I haven't flown the J41 that much but when I do fly it, I usually fly it hitting alt sel and v/s and select the V/S on the FMC panel. You might want try this and also wait for a professional to answer.Taylor Oldham
October 16, 200916 yr Uncommanded? It is the Flight Director that provides commands to AP, where are the FD bars?, are they being followed?. If FD commands the pitch up and the IAS is set correctly (and properly displayed on EADI) then everything should be OK. You always have to check the actual FD mode that it is the same you really selected. Michael J.
October 16, 200916 yr If you are accelerating when you engage IAS mode the aircraft will pitch up to maintain speed. Only engage IAS mode with stabilised speed. Use V/S mode for acceleration in the climb. The AP is only doing what you tell it too.Kevin

October 16, 200916 yr Commercial Member You need to be stabilized and trimmed in your climb before you engage IAS - it is not VNAV, FLCH etc. Manually get yourself at climb speed (170KIAS usually), activate the IAS mode, make sure the speed displayed at the bottom right of the EADI is 170, and then and only then actually engage the autopilot. If you're accelerating or going at a higher speed than what the IAS mode is set to and then you engage the AP, you're going to see it pitch up to lose the extra airspeed.
