November 1, 200916 yr Can someone direct me to a good source that can help me learn how to read approach charts? Im wanting to kick my flight simming up a notch and thought I would try to tackle proper approach proceedures using charts I can get from chartfinder. Jim Wenham
November 1, 200916 yr I used this site when learning about navigation and approaches in general - also covers chart reading:http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/index.htm Tom Risager NGX tutorial: http://library.avsim.net/sendfile.php?Location=AVSIM&Proto=ftp&DLID=162360 SIDs & STARs Worked Examples: LOWI-UUDD, KSEA-KLAX, EKCH-ENGM, YSCB-YPAD
November 1, 200916 yr That YouTube link sends you to four, very well put together videos. Considereing how much information there is.. he did an excellent job..BUT.. at the same time, it really illustrates how there is no quick way to learn this stuff. And, he kinda goes at it backwards. You need to be able to read and follow, a terminal procedure without having to think about it.. in a small, slow airplane.. BEFORE even thinking about SIDs and STARs. They assume you're flying something big and fast. You'll just get aggravated and frustrated, trying to read/fly.. SIDs/STARs.. before getting a good mastery of instrument navigation, in general. The other link is timeless, and has been a great intro for this stuff, for many years.
November 2, 200916 yr US FAA has something online called Instrument Procedures Handbook which is worth looking at. It uses the "naco" charts as reference but ICAO charts are about the same.http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/aviatio...dures_handbook/scott s..
November 2, 200916 yr Here's a good link.http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/ndb-appr.htmBy the way, visit a nearby airport to buy terminal procedures. I recently bought a two state book for under $6. It really enhances the whole sim experience, and you don't have to worry about downloading and printing all the approach plates.Curt Curt Branch
