possible video card problem?

Featured Replies

hi all,has anyone experienced this? while playing FSX sometimes the monitor screen will go blank with a "monitor is working input 1 no signal" msg. on the screen. (it is normal to see this screen when i "cold boot" the system. i always turn the monitor on b4 turning on the PC). also, when this happens the pwr. switch light on the monitor has gone from green to amber. FS appears to still be running because you can still hear the sound. also, the system itself appears to be running ie... case fans are running, HD light is active, keyboard lights are on, PC power switch is on. etc... although, i had a new twist with todays flight. the FS sound went away for a minute or 2 then came back and was still there when i gave up and hit the reset switch to reboot the computer.the above has been occuring since i got the EVGA Nvidia GTX285 card. it has happened with both WinXP-64 bit & Win7-64 bitthis has never happened during a "normal" cold boot. Only when playing FSX. i haven't played FS9 in a while. doesn't happen when watching streaming videos either.what is really odd is, i have made flights of 12-14 hrs. long with no probs. other times this has happened from as little as 2-3 hrs., to 6-8 hrs. into the flight. btw, sometimes when when i press the reset switch to reboot the system i get a BIOS beep code during the reboot process (that according to the manual) indicates that the video card is not detected. however, i didn't get that BIOS beep code today during reboot. needless to say i'm soooooooooooooooooooooooo confused.does this sound like a video card prob. or a monitor prob? or neither?System Specs...Asus P6T V2 with latest BIOSi-975 oc'd to 4ghz6GB Mushkin Red Line @ 6-7-6-18 1.66vEVGA (oc'd version) GTX285 1GB 191.07 Nhancer 2.5.7 (182.50 with WinXP-64 & Nhancer 2.5.1)Sony CPD-G520 21" CRTWD Raptor 150GB HDWin7-64 HP with all updatesSB X-Fi Titanium PCI-E with the Alchemy program for FSX, FS9, Jane's WWII Fightersrunning FSX with PMDG744, FS2Crew, RCv4All cable conncetions are secure & video card fully seated as well as everything else. thanks in advance for your help.happy flyin, fmMerry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. 1. Have you tried to remove the OC?
  2. Tried to use the latest video drivers (195.62)?
  3. Have your PSU enough power?

First, some basic hardware steps:1. Remove the video card, do a close visual inspection of the contacts on the card edge. Take a pencil eraser and lightly rub each of the contacts on both sides of the card to clean them.2. While the card is out of the case, use a strong flashlight and do a close visual inspection of the card slot. Look for foreign bodies like paper, plastic, hair, etc. Look for cracks or bent contacts.3. Try using a different PCIe slot for the vid card to see if the slot you were using is bad. Also pay close attention to the alignment of the card in the slot. I have an 8800GTX on one of my machines that has a problem with the bend in the card bracket, and I have to shim the bracket to keep it from pulling the card out of alignment when I put the screw in to hold the card into the backplane.4. If you have one, swap to another video cable to determine if the cable is bad.5. If you or a friend has another machine, you might try putting the video card into that machine for testing.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

hi Bob,i did a visual inspection on the card & slot and didn't see any probs. dust, debris, etc... best i can tell the slot appears to be fine as well as the contacts on the card. no visual indications of overheating damage to the card. last time i checked (recently) the video card fan was spinning.the card is not difficult to remove or insert and is fully seated with no binding.i don't have another system to test the card with.the pins on the video card cable connector is not bent either. i will see if i can grab another cable soon and see if that's the prob. doesn't seem to be any kind of a pattern here. one would assume that making 12-14 hr. long flts. with no probs. would rule out a hardware prob., even a cable of some sort for that matter.thanks for the suggestions. happy flyin, fm

Cables is cables... if it was broke it would stay broke.. especially if your not moving it around. It sure looks like your video card is going bad... if it is your problem should be increasing in frequency... ie. the time between events should get shorter. You could probably find a ... cheap test card on ebay for a few dollars....See if the vendor has a diagnostic and run it on your card... that should stress it out and cause it to fail.

Have the same GPU and had nothing but issues similar to yours with that driver. A new world opened up to me when I uninstalled 191, used Driver Sweeper, and installed 195.62And get EVGA Precision to monitor (and eventually clock) your GPU. Also use nHancer setup as depicted in http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_post...aphics+problems
