FS9 tweak guide

Featured Replies

Hi there.Sorry if this has been addressed in the past but I can't seem to track down any info. Is there an FS9 tweak guide (preferably by NickN or someone with the equivalent knowledge)?. I am running FS9 together with FSGenesis mesh, FSGlobal2008, UT all versions, Flight environment, Ground Environment and localized scenary add-ons so my FS9 HDD is pretty loaded (70% Full). My system specs for FS9 are:Intel Core2 Extreme QX9770 @ 3200MHzAsus P5E X38chipset based Mobo4GB DDR2 dual channel RAM @ 1066MHzNvidia Geforce 8600GT with 512MB VRAMWinXPx64 SP2 on dedicated HDD (80GB - not vraptor)FS9 on dedicated HDD (80GB) (not velociraptor)O&O Defrag11Pro x64 edn used for both HDDs (HDDs defraged multiple times using SpaceX3times and NAmex2times and offline defrag for Os)At areas like switzerland with heavy traffic, detailed mountain mesh and bad weather(4-5 cloud layers) I get 10fps with all sliders set to max. When weather is fine I get 30-40 and even 50fps. So its the clouds that kill my performance. Also Only ONE core is being used by FS9.exe as reported by task manager. The remaining three cores remain inactive. Is there a way to use them in order to spread the processing load to all 4 cores. I tried enabling them from the task manager but it doesn;t allow any change of the affinity mask. I believe this CPU is an overkill for FS9 but it should provide enough proc.power to be able to run FS9 under any weather conditions at 20+ fps. Any tips greaty appreciated.Happy and New Year to everybody.

no. the use of multiple cores requires a complete rework of FS code.--

Yes, you could use FS-GS to do your set up. I dont have FS9, but they did my FSX setup and I dont spend anytime tweaking. They are a pay service and it will cost you about $80 and take 4 to 6 hours to complete. Or, you can spend days or weeks scouring the internet for tips and tweaks that may or may not work. As you can see in internet forums there are all kinds of posts saying to do this or do that, when in fact many of the tweaks either just provide placebo effect, don't work, or make things work. Sometimes you will find a tweak that may actually improve performance, but I would rather leave it to a professional who sets up sims everyday for a living and actually knows what works and what doesn't.Avsim did a review here: http://www.avsim.com/pages/0306/FSGS/fsgs.htmI would recommend it as I don't mind spending the money to have the absolute best possible setup for the equipment that I already own.Good luck.

You can use the set affinity to load FS9 to a specific core (type ctrl + alt + delete and then right click on fs9.exe and set affinity), and run your other programs (such as squawk box, Active Sky/REX) on another core, it may help.Make sure you are using nhancer to get the most from your graphics card.Use FS Auto Start to shut down non essential processes, this may improve performance. If multiple cloud layers eat away at your FPS, try using lower resolution clouds. REX alows you to choose what resolution textures to use.Hope this helps!

cmpbellsjc, That's the path I'm going to take. not so much for FS9 but for FSX. I've seen nothing but good reviews for this service. As a matter of fact, I'm waiting to hear from Michael Greenblatt concerning the process and how to get started. I'm tired of the constant searches and tweaks.

Yeah it was probably the best money I ever spent on FS. Years ago when I was on FS9 on my old rig I spent months and years scouring the forums for tips and tweaks. Some worked, most didn't. One guy would say do this, another would say the opposite. Like a lot of people I wanted to do-it-myself and save a few bucks, but then I read the review on FS-GS and waited until I had my new system and made the jump to FSX. It was well worth the money to have an expert who knows the OS'es and FSX/FS9 inside and out to get it done properly and save me a lot of time in the long run. Not to mention he gives free service after the initial set up if you want to change something or have a question.
