Autogen drawing distance

Featured Replies

Hi folksI posted a request for help early in January (Problems with Autogen) but have had little response so far (many thanks to those that did). Sorry to ressurect this problem, but if I cannot get it fixed I will have to re-install FS9 (again) which I am loathe to do.In essence, it seems like my autogen is only appearing at very short range (approximately 1nm). Other scenery objects (landmark buildings such as New York, airport scenery addons and custom-built scenery objects) seem to appear at normal distances, just the generic buildings etc are missing beyond this short-range perimeter. All the autogen is there, because it will eventually appear when I get close enough. Am I missing a setting that controls this autogen drawing distance? Could a stray .BGL cause this to happen? All my machine specs, configuration settings and some example images can be found on the original posting Problems with Autogen as well as some of the steps that I have taken so far.If anyone can help, I would be very grateful. Thanks in anticipation.Owen

Instead of reinstalling FS9, have you tried deleting FS9.cfg and letting FS rebuild it? You'll lose all settings, but it's better than a reinstall. But if you can't afford losing all your settings, can you post please the TERRAIN section of your fs9.cfg file? Only that section, please. I think the problem lies in one or two lines of that section.Best regards from Colombia,Luis Miguel

Hi LuisThanks for responding so quickly. I have already created a fresh FS9.CFG file, but unfortunately that did not cure the problem (please see the link to my original post above for all the things I have tried so far). My [TERRAIN] settings in the FS9.CFG are as follows:[TERRAIN]TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=100.000000TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=100.000000TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=19TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=5TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=3.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=3.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=4Any suggestions gratefully received.CheersOwen

Try this:[DISPLAY] UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT= 30 TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT= 400 [TERRAIN]TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=100.00000 0TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=100.00000 0TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=5TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.00000 0TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=9.0000 00TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=4

Hi JoshThanks for the suggestion. I tried your settings but, unfortunately, I've still got the same problem. I don't know enough about how autogen buildings are created but I'm wondering if there are different BGL files for bringing up autogen buildings at different ranges and somehow the one drawing out buildings beyond the 1nm range has been corrupted or overwritten (probably talking out of the back of my head). As I have said already, the autogen is there, but only when I get within close range. Any more suggestions would be really appreciated. All the bestOwen

Do you have nHancer installed?

Judging by the screenshots on your origninal thread, I really don't think there's a problem anywhere. That autogen draw distance looks normal to me. Have you seen some shots that show autogen at greater distances or something?Maybe try setting the "AUTO_LOD" to off if it is currently set to on. Not sure if this controls the autogen LOD radius but may be worth a bash.

Hi JoshYes, I do have nHancer installed. Settings are as follows:AA Combined 8xSEnhanced in game settings - OFFGamma Correction - ONTransparency - MULTIAnisotropic Filtering - APPLICATIONVert Sync - ONTexture Filtering - HIGH QUALITYTrilenear - OFFNegative LOD Bias - CLAMPClum...where would I find AUTO-LOD?Thanks again for your inputs guys.Owen

Its in your fs9.cfg. "AUTO_LOD=x", 0=off, 1=on.Not sure what it does for sure in fs9, but in other games an entry similar to this works in unison with your frame limit. I'd imagine that with it turned on, if your FS9 frame rate drops below what you have the limiter set to, then it will start to automatically reduce detail to compensate.Mine has always been set to 0 (off) so maybe worth giving a bash if yours is currently set to on. Set your AF to 16x as well to try and shift those blurries. Still pretty sure your screens look normal though, especially if you have ultimate terrain installed, which will reduce autogen.

Hi ClumTried with the AUTO_LOD set both ways with no joy I'm afraid (it was already set to 0). I'm intrigued by your observation that you think my screen shots look normal. Have I been missing something for the four years that I have been using FS9?...I certainly cannot remember such a barren wasteland as depicted in my first image (Problems with Autogen) viewing downtown New York from KJFK (and this is repeated for so many other 'urban' areas). I would be really interested to make a comparison with screen shots from other users (just slew up to around 1300ft above KJFK and point the aircraft at the Manhattan skyline). And remember, as stated in my original post, I have removed UT USA completely, so that isn't an issue any more. Really appreciate your input and ideas. All the bestOwen

I have removed UT USA completely, so that isn't an issue any more. Owen
Just a thought: before you removed UT USA have you used the restore FS2004 to original settings feature. If you did not do it than your autogen can still be missing however it would be sparse at close distances as well. If you did not do it than it could be worth a try reinstalling UT and using the restore fs2004 menu choice before removing it again.Alex

ohanmer, here's my version of your second picture in the original post. Didn't try to match the rest as I do have GE pro, UT USA as well as FSDT KJFK (which causes an exclude) and Aerosofts Manhattan installed.enb2010_1_26_22_8_27-1.jpgGive or take I think the look pretty similar in terms of autogen. The only real difference is that my base textures appear a little sharper in the distance, which gives a less barran look. Autogen is set to max and UT lights are off so that's the maximum that FS will show.

Thanks for all your help guys.Clum...you are right about the level of buildings...they do seem about the same...it's the base textures that seem to be completely missing in my setup compared to your screen grab. So now maybe worth looking in that direction for an answer....Gus...Thanks for the link...a few more interesting parameters that I wasn't even aware of...so I will have a tweak and see if that does anything.Alex...although I removed UT after the problem occured...you still might be onto to something. So I will have a go at re-installing UT and see what happens.Oh well...If at first you don't succeed etc etc.....Onwards and upwards. Will keep you posted.Cheers everyoneOwen
