VFR in Australia

Featured Replies

Hi all,I am looking for relatively recent CAA charts covering Australia and something like the Pooleys Flight guide. Can someone direct me to where I can purchase them. If not, what is the standard thing pilots in Australia use? I am willing to buy them but if there are some out of date ones available cheaper or free, I don't mind that either :-)Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for that link, it has some GREAT stuff on it and I have bookmarked it.I am however looking for printed material like the Pooleys flight guides and still a CAA chart/map of Australia.

Can't post an eBay link but if you go to eBay and search using the words "MapTrax Chart" you will find Australian charts. They aren't cheap though.Edit: Sorry it looks like these are digital charts and not paper charts.Todd

What do the real life pilots use?

http://www.airservicesaustralia.com/flying/default.aspTry the air services australia site again amd the Aeronautical Information Package link on the above page. The En Route Supplement Australia (ERSA) is probably like Pooleys. It contains airfield information which I think is what Pooleys does. This is used by realworld pilots in addition to the procedure and aerodrome charts which a link was given to in an earlier post. You can download ERSA airfield by airfield or buy a hard copy for about $30 Australian (god knows how much it would cost to post to the UK which is where I presume you are). Visual guides provide VFR info online in your browser for most of the cities and this would make a good place to start.CASA has some downloadable Visual Pilot Guides for the major VFR airfields like Archerfield, Moorabin, Bankstown etc. Use google to search as the webpage isn't showing at the moment. You can download ERSA free but for charts it seems like the only way is to buy them by using the online store at air services australia (website above). The are other sites that resell these products.WAC charts provide a high level overview and are available to cover all of australia.VNC (visual nav charts) go into more detail and include airspace but cover only selected areas.VTC (visual terminal charts) go into even more detail and include VFR reporting points as well as VFR routes in high traffic areas. For FS VFR use I'd start with the VNC charts and avoid the WAC charts. A good road atlas of Australia would be a cheaper way than buying all the WAC charts.

Thanks for taking the time to give me all that information and the hints. It was just what I needed.
