Potential new flight simulator engine?

Featured Replies

Don't know if this has been posted or not, however there is a new flight simulator engine in the works-- and the potential looks fantastic. Here is a demo of the engine....http://outerra.com/

It does look nice indeed (the picture you see before starting the Cessna movie looks like a photograph!) but it's not a real new flight sim in the making: it's a 3D engine. The fact that they chose to make a demo with a Cessna doesn't mean they are planning to release a full blown flightsim with it. I think. It's also quite simple yet: no roads, houses, clouds, etc. etc. But I have to say that what is has does look great...! I really, really love it that the forests are just trees and not textures with trees with some autogen on it. It looks so real! As beautiful as FSX can be (FTX!), I never can get used to the forests: to me forests never look like real forests because all I see are the autogentrees: the foresttexture underneath just doesn't do it for me... And since I can''t run autogen any higher than dense, forests never look like real forests on my computer...But well, who knows, it would be great if the quality of this demo could be translated to a flightsim!

I too like the texturing, it does look real and it would be cool if they could turn it into a flight sim. Lots of very nice pics in the gallery. Maybe something to this! Vincent

Read the forums - mentions discussions with Aerosoft. It sounds like they want to team up with a flight sim developer as they don't have the resources to develop a full blown sim.

I read that info about Aerosoft too on their forums. Unfortunately it also mentions this:I've been contacted by Mathijs Kok from Aerosoft already some time ago, but then he went silent. I can only guess he got averted by the fact that we are just a small independent developer (in fact we did it just in our spare time then) and we don't have any product history yet. Can't blame him for that either, we only have our demo work speaking for us but there is much money in it for Aerosoft. Additionally, he expressed himself on Aerosoft's forums recently that "as good as it is at what the demo's show, it is not what we need". It's a shame, especially after seeing this video in youtube:
What the Outerra team have produced looks very impressive, but a new flightsim needs more than just a graphical rendering system. But surely Aerosoft with all their clout could acquire the company. Wouldn't Aerosoft need a team of developers concentrating on different depertments? Rhydian

I think so far it's just an earth mesh, and he's experimenting with textures, atmospheric effects and other things. It looks very interesting so far, I'd love to see something come from it.
