February 9, 201016 yr CNN has an article today about the Loran-C system being shut down across the country. The question I have is do we ever use the system in FS9? Also, what is the impact in the real world navigation of today if anyone knows. Markhttp://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/02/08/loran.n...dex.html?hpt=T2
February 9, 201016 yr Moderator FS has never used Loran-C at all, so there's zero impact on its demise... ;) Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
February 9, 201016 yr Good bye to an old friend. When I joined the US Navy in 1960 in the middle of the Pacific ocean all we had was celestial navigation and Loran "A". Then, Loran ( LOng RAnge Navigation) took a long time to get a fix and the accuracy was questionable, at best. Then Loran C came along and it was a superior navigation system, then came OMEGA, then GPS...... jerrycwo4
February 9, 201016 yr i used loran back in the early 80s on the family sailboat. was a PITA as the location i sailed made receiption a challenge. used the unit only rarely in low-visibility situations.then came GPS ... more exact and easy to use.-- D. February 9, 201016 yr LORAN with its low frequency system worked for subs under water as I recall. I doubt that GPS would. I suppose subs link to GPS when they can surface or get an antenna up from just below and then calibrate an IRS of some type.A little off topic here :)
