March 27, 201016 yr Hi,Well, Not what I expected in regards to Nvidia's latest release. Take a look.http://www.techspot.com/review/263-nvidia-geforce-gtx-480/Hope someone does some FSX/FS9 tests. Makes me more than a little reluctant to get rid of my GTX 285 board just yet.Looks like my i975/GTX285 combo will be with me a little longer. March 27, 201016 yr More reviews here:http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3783http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforc...x-480,2585.htmlhttp://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-470-480-review/http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/03/26/..._480_sli_reviewThe card seems to be the fastest on the market for now.I'll wait for feedback regarding how the card performs in FSX from a reliable source.
March 27, 201016 yr It's the fastest card for DX11 and since i don't want to relinquish CUDA and PhysX, i maybe order a GTX 480, because it seems to me more future proof for upcoming DX11 games. And the performance reports which i did read about the Radeon 5870 in FSX also don't make me very enthusiastic to buy a Radeon 5870.But for FSX only, i wouldn't buy a new card, at the moment.

Makes me more than a little reluctant to get rid of my GTX 285 board just yet.Looks like my i975/GTX285 combo will be with me a little longer.I read the review but I have serious doubts as to its validity. The Radeon 5870 has been out for a while with video card drivers made just for it and not for any of the other Radeon products. The Nvidia 480 hasn't even been released yet to the general public and no official drivers are out on it yet. Why Techspot decided to run tests without official drivers is beyond me. Putting the product up against products that have had driver updates is not fair IMHO. I think the tests will be quite different once drivers have been developed, tested, and updated just as the other products the 480 was put up against. I agree there should be more competition between AMD and Nvidia regarding video cards. That should help keep prices competitive but Techspot, this is the wrong way to do it. I can see me going out and buying the 5870 thinking it's faster and better then finding out a couple of months later the reviewers used the wrong drivers, the wrong equipment, etc., and the 480 IS faster and better. But, oh well, it's just a review and another guide or tool for consumers to use to buy a product. But, for those who hate Nvidia for being on top for so long, this is like winning the lotto!Best regards,Jim

I am sure that there will be a balancing out after a bit, but there are some significant indications that things aren't the same at Nvidia as they once were before this stumble. They were not able to pull it off this time, and its not that they haven't poured all they have in R&D, corporate resources, total effort and time and still came up tantalizingly short. They are fortunate they could have something to release for their namesake. There is big trouble in the camp and more brewing. Considering the reaction on most sites, the attitude adjusters, the ones who help steer mass public opinion, are not on Nvidia's side this time, for the first time in a very long time. This feels even worse that the Windows Vista debacle for Microsoft. Will better drivers improve things? Of course, but don't think they have not been burning the midnight oil to have the best possible drivers for this launch and they had a long time to do it. What you see is what you get, at least for now. A couple months from now, there will be momentum for either ATI or Nvidia, and many would say that who will enjoy it is no longer very clear. Besides, it is ATI's turn now. I for one wish things were very different than they now look for I have always been confident in Nvidia. Feels like a sea change.Stephen
March 28, 201016 yr Commercial Member It's also important to note that it's not like Nvidia made the drivers for the 400 series yesterday or something - this card has been delayed a ton of times, they've had it for close to a year now. HardOCP even made mention of the fact that they didn't expect the drivers to improve all that much because of this. It's not like it's brand new hardware they just didn't have time to code for yet like you sometimes see when a card is developed very quickly. March 28, 201016 yr There is nothing wrong in NV camp, If you read up on it the real issue was that TSMC just didn't have a mature enough 40nm proccess and it effected ATI as well as NVThis is hardly different than when the 280GTX came out "its too hot" too much draw" which was as true for the 280 as it is now for the 480.480 is a very good card, but the refresh as well as the full on 512 core version will be the card to get and I'll wait for that just like many of us did on passing up the 280 for the 285GTXAs for ATI, 5x is great card, just still too many driver issues with FSX that doubtful will ever be fixed, but the competition between the two will benefit all of us both ways. Also announce is AMD's hexCore's will be kept at or below $300 maybe this will help force Intel to reprice things a bit.... next fall is going to be a good one. :)
March 28, 201016 yr Unfortunately i can't wait and ATI is no option for me due to its problems with FSX and the lack of CUDA.Hmmm 470 or 480... :( I'm pretty sure that improved drivers will at least change the 3DMark Vantage performance dramatically :(
March 28, 201016 yr Sorry, can't edit my post. That looks interesting: http://www.guru3d.com/news/coolit-systems-...70--480-cooler/

People like me scrambled for these cards as they were anxious to see what DX10 could do. ATI/AMD took a long, long time to finally get a DX10 compatible board out but this was around the time of their consolidation and that might have been the cause for the delays. But in any case they were not anxious to support the latest technologies. Nvidia was and that's one reason why they have been pretty successful over the years. I use 3DMark Vantage for my benchmark program and run it whenever there's a driver update or OS update. I had an overall performance score of 8513 when I installed the 175.13 drivers for my 8800GTX's way back when. Today, with the same system hardware, I have a performance rating of 14088 with the 197.13 drivers and Win7 64 bit OS. So I strongly believe performance can be improved with better video card drivers. Unfortunately it takes a long time for the really good tweaked drivers to arrive. Technology has dramatically changed over the past few years and I'm hoping Nvidia techs can issue some really great drivers for their latest cards.Best regards,Jim
March 28, 201016 yr It is interesting to note that Jetline Systems who in my opinion are absolute pros and most knowledgeable how to build the best rig for FSX at this point recommend 5870 for FSX. And as far as I remember they were always squarely in the Nvidia camp, never ever recall them recommending an ATI card. Michael J.
March 28, 201016 yr I don't know Jetline Systems but did they test the GTX 480 and did they compare it with the Radeon 5870? It would be also interesting to know if they have been able to solve the vsync and cloud density issues. I also think that they will be able to improve their drivers and they will certainly optimize them for the latest games and benchmarks. And noise and heat problems should be solvable by using 3rd party cooling systems. E.g. the Prolimatech MK-13 seems to also fit the GTX 480.

As to Vsync and clouds (as to 5870) - there have been numerous posts on these forums and for many these are simply non-issues. Michael J.
