HD5870 FS2004 & FSX Settings?

Featured Replies

Hey guys!Recently I've had my GTX295 replaced with a Sapphire HD5870 'cause the 295 broke down. However, I am very disappointed with 5870's performance in FS2004 and FSX, for I can't get the AA to work as well as it did with the 295 and the FPS are quite low. I would really appreciate it if somebody shared his Catalyst settings or help me somehow get the AA to work with satisfactory performance.Thank you in advance,Panayotis

Hi Panayotis What driver version are you using. Only today i installed my first ever radeon card which is the 5830. When i first fired up FSX/FS9 i to had terrable performance, with those horrible jaggies back with avengence, but after i installed driver version 10.3 things have been very good, i still have a few minor isues but i'm sure with a little more tweaking i will sort them out. Here is the link for them. hope they sort out some of your problems.http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=318091 Thanks shaun

Hello Shaum, Thanks for your reply. However, I do have the latest 10.3 drivers installed.

I also run 10.3 ATI CCC but I don't really know what exactly your problem is you told us. I am using in ATI Driver setup the default settings, but have Adaptive Anti-Aliasing activated, Catalyst A.I is set do Default (slider on the left). In FSX I check Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering. What exactly is your problem? I recommend you also to use the bufferpools=0 and highmemfix=1 tweak.Greetings,Pegasus.

My problem is that I get very low FPS both in FS2004 and FSX. I mean in FS2004 I get 5-10 FPS while at 30,000 feet with the Wilco 737! What am I doing wrong? And I was wondering if the settings of the 5870 make the things worse, since with the 295 I was getting a lot more FPS. My PC Specs are: Intel QX6800@2,93, 4GB Ram, 300GB Velociraptor + 750GB, HD5870 running @ 1920*1200

I also switched from a (malfunctioning) 285GTX (subsequently replaced by a 295GTX), and now I have migrated to a Gigabyte 5870.First, it's critically important that you remove ALL traces of the nVidia drivers from your system and get a clean install on the new card. This is how I did it:0. Before starting, download and install the DriverSweeper program (available at www.guru3d.com) and the add-on profile for it written by theGryphon (link in the Guru3D forums). Also download the latest Catalyst drivers from ati.amd.com1. Uninstall nHancer, eVGA Precision and any other nVidia add-on utilities2. Uninstall nVidia 3D Stereo, Physx, and Video Drivers in that order. Do not reboot when prompted.3. Delete the C:\nVidia directory in its entirety4. Reboot into safe mode (hold down F8 key during boot)5. Run Driver Sweeper (select ATI, nVidia Video, nVidia Physx, and theGryphon profiles)6. Shut down your computer7. Remove the nVidia card and replace with the ATI card, ensuring that the computer AND monitor are completely depowered (i.e. unplugged)8. Start computer, and do not let the computer look for drivers online if it asks9. Temporarily turn off your anti-virus program (very important--several popular AV programs will badly dork a driver install)10. Run the Catalyst installer11. Reboot, and then set up your display resolution and parameters:In the Catalyst Control Center 3D settings, "All" tab I have it set up as follows:AA: 8X wide-tent (use application settings unchecked)AF: 16X (use application settings unchecked)Catalyst AI: Advanced (Disable unchecked)MipMap detail level: High QualityWait for Vertical Refresh: On, unless application specifiesAA Mode: Adaptive Multi-Sample AA (this is the middle setting on the slider--setting slider to far right "Super Sample AA" will dramatically hit your FS frame rates)OpenGL settings: Triple buffering checked (N/A for FS, but applies to some other 3D games)If VSync is important to you, you can force it on with either the ATI Tray Tools utility (analagous to the nHancer utility for nVidia cards) or with RivaTuner. There are already threads in the forum discussing how to do that. Before running FS, you will need to remove all DISPLAY.Device.xxxxxx sections from your fs9.cfg/fsx.cfg files, or rename the fs9.cfg and/or fsx.cfg file to xxx.bak and let FS build a new one. Make sure to check the entire .cfg file, as multiple occurrences of these sections in the file are common. Also, some people have found that swapping from nVidia to ATI or vice-versa is best performed by reinstalling Windows and FS from the ground up with the new card. I have not seen a difference in performance either way, but if you do not carefully and completely remove ALL of the previous drivers, registry settings, and config settings for the old card, it can hit FS performance hard.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

Hi,Today I also swapped my broken GTX285 for an ATI 5870 (Sapphire) and to be honest I'm not yet convinced about the (AA) graphics quality.I uninstalled/removed all nVidia drivers, using Driver Cleaner and then install the Catalist drivers version 10.3Then I applied to settings of Bob mentioned above. The framerates are (as expected) more or less the same as the GTX285 but the quality of the AA is somewhat disappointing.Check the following picture (FS2004, Aerosoft EHAM, stand B92):The distant tire markings looked much smoother with my GTX285. In the picture below they look pretty coarse (if that is the right word)Is this ATI quality and do I have to cope with it (which I can) or can I do better?EgbertATI5870.jpg

Egbert...I'm not sure that's an AA issue. Looking around that screenshot at items like light poles, building edges, and the graphics on the airplane, it looks like your AA is working well. You might try playing with the filtering settings. In general, though, the ATI's IQ seems a bit less pleasing than nVidia's in my subjective opinion, but it's been refreshingly hassle free for me after months of maddening black screen crashes and other issues with a couple high-end nVidia cards and a long series of bugged nVidia drivers. Whatever small nagging dislikes I have with image quality are more than offset by being able to get through a long flight without issue.CheersBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

Hi Bob After days off pulling my hair out (what i have left) i followed your instruction and i am pleased to report in i that i'm estactic with the results. For days now after purchasing my first Radeon card (5830) i have had nothing but sleepless nights and recently felt that i had really wasted all my money on a card that was more suited to other games other than flight sim. I have a little bit of shimmering on some 3rd party planes but overall a 100% improvement. Kind Regards Shaun

You might try playing with the filtering settings.
I'll do that, trying to fine tune, but it's not really a biggy. Also I ran the same OCCT test which I did with the GTX285 and the temp at 100% load is stable at 78C which fan at only 60%My GTX285 would ran 90C+ with fan at 80%+ and then black screen. The GTX480 runs even hotter it seems. I hope that nVidia soon will get their temps back to normal proportions.
