April 21, 201016 yr Hi all,I am using nav charts for flying. But I do not know how turns shown on approach maps are flown. How do I know how "steep" a turn is so that I can catch the next nav point correctly? How will I instruct my aircraft the correct bank angle and speed?Thank you,Christos
April 21, 201016 yr G'DayGenerally the turns on published charts are at rate one turns. Which means it takes 2 mins to do a 360 turn. The angle of bank for a rate one turn is calculated using the airspeed. Rule of thumb is, 10% +7 of your current airspeed. Example would be... airspeed of 150knts 15+7+22* Angle of bank. Up to a maximum of 25* AOB (standard IFR restriction). I dont know about Airbus but on Boeings you can select your desired AOB with a switch on the HDG bug knob. The FMC (if being used) automatically calculates the AOB and the time to start the turn to perform the turn. Hope this helps!
