May 2, 201016 yr Hello everyone,I've been experiencing some HD trouble lately. As you can see in my sig, I'm currently on a 320 GB hard drive. I used to have a 500 GB hard drive solely dedicated to FSX and addons, but here's what mystifies me.One morning, I turn on the computer only to find that it won't POST, and upon inspection, the 500 GB hard drive had failed, and somehow, in turn, the 320 GB drive was wiped out as well. I have gone through THREE hard drives like this, and for no apparent reason, they kept failing, and I had to exchange them for new ones. Only the 320 GB hard drive survives today. Is it the motherboard or the HD that is the culprit? HD's shouldn't fail on a monthly basis...what's going on? May 2, 201016 yr Power supply or motherboard would be the likely culprits.Agree. But to brick three different hard drives without bothering any other components makes me think less a PS problem and more that it's a bad HDD controller on the mobo (or possibly the overclock is causing the controller to become unstable). Does that motherboard have a secondary drive controller you can swap to? Have you tried dropping to stock speeds after a failure to see if you can format the drive?I'd also run MemCheck86 for a few hours and make sure you don't have some intermittent RAM problems.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO Bob Scott | President and CEO, AVSIM Inc ATP Gulfstream II-III-IV-V Sys1 (MSFS20+24/XPlane12+11): AMD 9800X3D, water 2x240mm, MSI MPG X670E Carbon, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, nVidia RTX4090FE Alienware AW3821DW 38" 21:9 GSync, 2x4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2x2TB Samsung 990 SSD, EVGA 1000P2 PSU, 12.9" iPad Pro Thrustmaster TCA Boeing Yoke, TCA Airbus Sidestick, Twin TCA Airbus Throttle quads, PFC Cirrus Pedals, Coolermaster HAF932 case Sys2 (P3Dv5/v4): i9-13900KS, water 2x360mm, ASUS Z790 Hero, 32GB GSkill 7800MHz CAS36, ASUS RTX4090 Samsung 55" JS8500 4K TV@60Hz, 3x 2TB WD SN850X 1x 4TB Crucial P3 M.2 NVME SSD, EVGA 1600T2 PSU Fiber link to Yamaha RX-V467 Home Theater Receiver, Polk/Klipsch 6" bookshelf speakers, Polk 12" subwoofer, 12.9" iPad Pro PFC yoke/throttle quad/pedals with custom Hall sensor retrofit, Thermaltake View 71 case, Stream Deck XL button box Sys3 (DCS/P3Dv4/ATS/ETS): AMD 7800X3D, MSI MPG X870E Carbon, Noctua NH-D15S, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, EVGA RTX3090 Alienware AW3420DW 34" 21:9 GSync, Corsair HX1000i PSU, 4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2TB Samsung 970Evo Plus, TM TCA Officer Pack, Saitek combat pedals, TM Warthog, TM RS300 FF wheel/pedals, Coolermaster HAF XB case
May 2, 201016 yr If retrieving data is an issue, one of the best devices any computer owner that isn't afraid to perform surgery on their rig is an SATA/IDE to USB adapter. I have saved countless drives filled with info by mounting them as usb devices and running diagnostics on them or just for the purpose of grabbing data. As an IT Mgr., my first impression would be that the motherboard and/or controller are at fault. Try re-loading the chipset drivers for the board. If that fails try booting the drives on a different board. If they were not configured as ACHI they probably will boot. If they were AHCI, be careful as the chipset software might clobber the drive. That's why you grab data from drive first then experiment!Good Luck! Hoping For CAVU --- Chris
May 2, 201016 yr ... the 500 GB hard drive had failed, ...the 320 GB drive was wiped out...What do you mean by "failed" and "wiped out"?Are you saying the data was lost or the drive was rendered inoperable (will not mount, cannot re-format)?Cheers,- jahman.
May 5, 201016 yr Author What do you mean by "failed" and "wiped out"?Are you saying the data was lost or the drive was rendered inoperable (will not mount, cannot re-format)?Cheers,- jahman. The 500 GB drive was rendered inoperable, in turn causing all the data in the 320 GB drive to be lost.I'll try reloading the chipset drivers and see if there is a secondary drive controller to use. I hope this never happens again. The problem is that if the motherboard is at fault, I'll probably try to replace it. If I replace the motherboard, I'll have to replace the CPU and other various components as well to keep up with the current technology, which would cost a lot of $$$ :( Thanks for the suggestions.
