Cockpit sound versus engine sound

Featured Replies

Hi All,Is there any way the cockpit sounds (buttons etc) can be made louder in relation to the engine noise.I know the PMDG sound can be adjusted together. But I would like to reulate them seperately.ThanksJose De Campos

In FS sound menu you can control engine, voice, enviroment etc sounds seperately.

I've tried the FS sound menu, but has no effect on MD11, you can lower all sound slidersand you will still get all aicraft sounds except if you're on external views. The PMDG soundmenu overrides the FS sound. Thanks Jose De Campos

Jose, are you using FS9 or FSX?The engine sound slider should have an effect for sure, don't know why it doesn't for you.Something seems to be a bit strange though, the engines are very quiet already with default settings, so if you need to reduce the engines even more then something might not be right there. Are you sure your speaker settings within windows are corresponding with the hardware you have?Markus

Hi MarkusI'm using FSX and the speaker settings are correct for the hardware. You are right, the default engines are quiet but what I've just realized is the sound which is overpowering the rest of the cockpit (including engines) isactually the sound from when you power up the APU.Because the APU (powered up) is so loud I can hardly tell the difference if engines are on or off (within the cockpit) even though engine sound sliders are at max.Is there a way I can reduce the APU background sound? Thanks again for the helpJose De Campos

Jose, the background sound you hear is not coming from the APU but is the normal ambient sound on the flight deck as soon as you have AC power (APU, EXT or GEN power). And you're right that this ambient sound makes it hard to hear the engines, but that's how it is on the real aircraft.Regards,Markus

Thats right! And just to make it more precise - that loud sound, that overrides everything mostly is cabin airflow. ;)Turn off packs! :( Thats not serious ofcourse!

To each his own I guess, but please believe me that the internal MD11 sounds from TSS are NOT the real thing. They have nothing to do with the real aircraft. We did around 15 hours in the full motion simulator just to record sounds to make the PMDG sound experience as realistic as possible. TSS obviously only used external recordings to make theirs. If you want to have maximum realism inside your flight deck, do NOT buy the TSS sound package. It's not the real flight deck you hear there...Markus

The PMDG soundset is exactly like it is in real life, i wouldn't mess with it. However, if a particular sound is just to loud for you then just use audacity and lower the sound on that particular file.

I really didnt notice a change in the flight deck sounds with the TSS pack. it sounds the same as i did when i installed it. the only thing that changed for me was the engine sounds and the flaps sounds, other than that no change, for me atleast and im using FSX.Brandon Elam

Keep in mind that sounds you hear on a video taken using non-professional gear (especially audio recording equipment) will in many case sound different to what you actually hear on the flight deck. Video cameras often have poor microphones built in and need an external mic to get the real stuff. I doubt that this was the case on this video. So you shouldn't take youTube videos as a reference for flight deck ambiance sound.Regards,Markus

And to make it even more precise: Packs is just a low pitch rumbling sound. The other humming noises you hear is mostly equipment cooling and recirculation fans on the flight deck. Those can be heard separately on the PMDG MD11.Markus
