Attempting to get FS9+addons operating smoothly on Win7

Featured Replies

So I have been trying to get my machine set back up here to get back into Vatsim again (hopefully). Got around last night to try and get everything loaded and configured as I've always had it.Unfortunately I seem to be hitting roadblocks at every turn. It's a Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit box. So far FS9 with the .1 update, FSnav, PMDG 737TNG, FSUIPC+WideFS, WideClient and Activesky on a second Windows 2000 machine. Now I am very tech literate and all but not so much when it comes to stuff that gives little to no clue to what is causing something not to work and lack of error messages. So far my problems are this:- When selecting the PMDG aircraft in the select aircraft dialog I don't get the classic Airac loading box as I used to even on a fresh install- PMDG panels blank and non-operational (I have read that this is common to their built in copy protection having a fit. Whether this is an incompatibility with Win7, an annoyance with UAC, etc. I have no clue)- FSnav db seems to come and go. Have had to reinitialize with the ODBC app once or twice. Seems to be UAC related and running FS9 as Administrator- Got WideFS to connect but ActiveSky doesn't seem to pick up on it and remains on 'FS is not yet connected'Haven't yet tried to install any more addons as that starts to get into Vatsim related stuff. Want to get the base install figured first. I am honestly at a loss because I haven't even had any issues with ActiveSky before. Once I got WideFS going, AS pretty much picked right up and operated without my control. My only thought at this point is that running this on Win7 is going to be a major hassle and I might be better off with a dual boot with XP dedicated for FS.Thanks!

I installed FS9 on Windows 7 (64-bit) a month or so ago and have had no real problems - indeed it runs very well. I've installed my PMDG 737s and everything works fine. Couple of things to remember when installing FS9 in W7: turn off User Account Control as this can interfere, and also install FS9 outside the Program Files folder. I created a separate folder called My Apps and put it in there, and have had no problems whatsoever in adding freeware, payware to the installation.Good luck!;)

Thanks. I'll have to try this especially with turning off UAC. Not once since participating in the pre-beta builds of Win7 have I ever come across a situation where it has done anything but hold up legitimate applications. If that doesn't work I can try a reinstall to a different location (or I have read in another thread elsewhere in the forum to take full ownership of the folder which may also work without a reinstall).A dualboot setup is actually promising especially with less system overhead to deal with. Right now I'm running on a 2.8ghz P4, 2GB ram, and a Geforce 6200 which, isn't bad in terms of FS9's requirements, but every bit helps. But the dualbooting aspect itself of constantly rebooting is an annoyance I'd love to avoid. :)

Occasionally when loading the PMDG 747 or MD-11 in Win7 x64 I get all blank screens and fuel at 100%, and I can change nothing (this is after loading the Cessna first). To sort this out, I reselect the same MD-11 or 747 again, and it loads OK the second time around. I've installed FS9 to it's own folder, but leave UAC on and have no problems.Cheers, SLuggy

I do not have a signature. Why are you reading this?

I think I am, unfortunately, going to have to break down and dualboot to accomplish this. I've tried just about every visible suggestion on this forum from installing FS9 to a different folder outside of Program Files, changing folder permissions and ownership, turning off UAC, yada yada. Not really getting anywhere. My PMDG 737TNG is still exhibiting the same issues and AS still doesn't want to pick up FS over WideFS (I haven't tried it on the same machine but my intent is to operate it on a second machine to offload cpu cycles so if it only works on the same machine it still doesn't work in my book). I have even tried reinstalling each piece many times with no luck. It may very well be my install of win7, no idea.Hopefully in the next few days I can sort it all and get this running again.

I'm running Win7 x64 with the PMDG 737 with no problems. You did not say if this is a fresh install of win7 or a upgrade from Vista or Win7 beta. It is highly recommended that you start with a fresh install of Win7, install all hardware drivers, turnoff UAC, set security and permisssions on your FS drive to allow full acess and load everything as the admistrator. Once you understand how Win7 security and permissions works FS9 and all it's addons will install without issue. Also I recommend installing the 64 instead of the 32 bit version.

I purchased a new computer earlier this yesr. I also install Win 7 Pro64. First off all items that will work under my new system operated very quickly. Problems are that a portion of my FS9 software will not function in this operating system. All of my Dreamfleet GA aircraft are toast. They use an older piece of software for thier navigation radios that will not operate in a 64 bit environment. Have the same problem with RC4 and my Reality XP gauges, but I believe that they can be fixed by moving FS9 Program Files away from the default W7 Program Folder. So far I have not reinstalled to its own folder as addressed by many of the answers I have found in the forums. I figure FS9 will either fail to a point that I need to start over or I'll wait for a rainy day week end. Note: I have replaced all of my Dreamfleet GAs with Carenado Aircraft and everything works great. Search the forums for 64 bit questions and solutions, for the most part I believe that most problems can be resolved.Tom

I am very well aware of Win7 security and know how it all operates. I have to deal with this stuff for a living. This is a clean install as I never mess with upgrades. Also, 64 bit would be nice but as I am running an older P4 I can only do 32 bit.Let me just rephrase at this point that I only have really 2 key issues to deal with before I attempt to move on with more addons: PMDG aircraft not working and AS not seeing FS over the WideFS link. FSnav has been fixed and was a simple permissions issue. But with the other 2 existing and not a single verifiable error log to go to. If I had even a small inklinkg of an idea WHAT was stopping up with these two addons I'd have a much better ability at fixing it and not be relegated to ugly workarounds like dualbooting just to run FS9.To be quite honest AS is the one that is really bothering me more than anything. PMDG I'm sure is an easy fix, I just need to get to trying another install with a different set of procedures. But AS has NEVER given me this problem before. WideFS clearly says it's connected but AS sits there dumbfounded. And I have ran this setup before many times without fail.

I have AS 6.5 and ASE running over fswide and simconnect on second computer running XP pro connecting to my main FS win7 computer. I got the 737 and the B1900 models operating without issue. Also I have all reality XP gauges operating under FS9. If you having isssue with the 430/530 waas garmins, you need the modify the FS9.exe file to get them to operate. Again you need to setup your user group permissions to allow full access to FS9 main folder and the My doucument Flight Sim file. (Crete a new user group). I called mine everyone and set my permisssions and security options for full access.

Somehow my FSInn has also been giving me a bit of a headache since I installed Win7 (thank goodness I mostly fly IVAO).I have to run the Control Panel as administrator; it allows me to connect to VATSIM this way, but some FSInn functions remain inoperative, like chat for example. Really annoying...not sure what has happened.

Well I do feel like such a noob right now. Though there is a tiny bit of Win7 involvement in it all which, as I alluded to in the first post, hits home on the point of lacking error messages creating one ugly wild goose chase. So I went ahead and started setting up a dualboot on a separate disk. Clean XP fully updated and just essentials for FS Vatsim operation. Installed everything right out of the gate before loading FS: FS, 9.1 update, FSUIPC+WideFS, FSnav, PMDG 737TNG, Airac updates. THIS time I got an error right off the bat from FSUIPC saying something about incompatibilities between versions. I don't even know what version of FSUIPC I used as my FS backup disc (basically a custom DVD that is based on the FS9 retail dvd with the 9.1 update and all of my top addons crammed in a separate folder) as I built it some years ago. Went to the FSUIPC site and grabbed the latest version I could find for FS9 that I am able to update to and it all loaded. ActiveSky picked up FS over WideFS, the 737 worked, etc..Now Win7 never even gave me this warning about version incompatibilities. Just let me run FS9 but these addons failed. This is where the big catch came into play. This time around I jumped back into Win7 and did the update of FSUIPC and WideFS and voila; Everything operates. The PMDG 737 is purring with all panels lit up. ActiveSky is registering and showing my parked airport and sending Wx data to the main FS PC.I'm going to stick to Win7 then and give it a fighting chance. Even though the little bit of test flying i did on the XP side was slick with solid locked 20fps rates rolling through LAX at Medium Low graphics whereas the same gfx settings normally nets me jumpy ~8-10fps rates at any AP.

As I was reading this, I thought "Perhaps I should ask if he has the latest version of FSUIPC installed on his new computer?", but thought "Nah, that can't be it!". Only to find out it was, by the time I got to the bottom. :)Glad you got it sorted,
