SSD SELECTION QUESTIONS

Featured Replies

Hi boys, just wanna throw a question at some of you guys. I'm currently helping a mate build a gaming rig for multiple games, but mainly FSX. He wants an SSD and I want to know what sort of space does FSX + addons + OS take up? Would it all fit on a 60GB SSD? Also, I have been looking around for him and have come up with 2 possibles, the Mushkin 60GB Callisto deluxe series with a 285MBs Read and 275MBs write (seq.). The other is the corsair performance series 64GB. The seq. speeds are slower (220/180) than the mushkin and is $15 more. Just wondering what one you guys prefer and which is the better buy and brand. Cheers

A 32GB SSD is the minimum for a Windows 7 64 bit install, atleast in my case. My OS is on a 64GB SSD and there is 35.2GB left over on that drive. For FSX with add-ons, a 64GB is going to be the minimum, but I would recommend a 128GB. I have a 64GB for FSX and my add-ons, and it only has 11GB left over.

I use my raptor for both OS & FSX. 116GB already used there

So there is no chance of havin FSX and the OS and addons all on a 60GB SSD? It was this or the raptor and he really preferred an SSD. Which of these SSD's are better quality and better overall?

I wouldn't do it. Because you'll only get what 50GB usable from that to start off, then FSX with addons can get huge fast. PNW scenery takes up like 6 GB on its own. I think my FSX install takes up 50GB by itself....I'd shoot for this instead (as a minimum):http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820167023Preferably this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820167024

They would be good but problems are budget, my mate has a max budget of $2500 AUD, and I'm not sure what those intels cost here in aus. Will look into it.Note: looked into those intels. The 80GB X25-M is $339 AUD. That's an extra $80 from the 60GB mushkin. I saw that there is an OCZ 96GB Vertex SSD 235/170MBs speeds for $10 more than intel. That's $90 more than mushkin 60Gb. Is this worth it?

I'm not exactly sure... I don't run an SSD myself. Just an opinion but I think the words "budget" and "SSD" shouldn't be in the same sentence heheMight want to just go with a raptor or standard 32mb cache hdd

Yeah he is getting a WD 500GB caviar black with 32MB cache for data. Would he be best to install OS on WD and fsx on 60GB ssd?

There's different schools of thought on this.I say put FSX on the SSD and the OS and other programs on the HDD.... I realize I'm sorta contradicting myself from above where I said 60GB is going to be tight for FSX+ addons but if he's getting the SSD I'd put FSX on it anyway.Other people will say to put the OS on the SSD - I've seen it done both ways.

I think my FSX install is about 30GB. How about this: I install the OS to the 500GB Hd to start with. Install FSX to te HD plus all addons. If there is still enough space left over, I will reinstall windows to the SSD.

One of the reasons to put FSX on its own ssd/hd is that you want to be able to defrag FSX within itself and not mix in any OS as that will just create a mess after a while. Dependant of which defrag method/program you use. I run fsx on a seperate drive just for this reason. I can not figure out any reason to run an operating system on a ssd unless you want a quick start up when you turn power on... I on the other hand would think the difference of fsx on SSD would be most beneficial. I am curious if SSD owners that have FSX (on them) are seeing any benefits? Thanks Steve

SSD's don't have any mechanical parts so they don't need defragging.

I use two of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...7-024-_-Product one for games and one for FSX.When formatted these have about 159 GB free. See my signature for everything I have for FSX. I still have 98.5 GB free on the FSX SSD.
I agree with that one - but I doubt that will fit Chris' friend's budget lol
