August 12, 201015 yr Hi Guys,I've got Windows 7 Professional 32 bit and have just installed FSX Deluxe Edition but not to sure if it's correct explaination below.I loaded the disk in which brought the setup option up so I right clicked to select Run as administrator but it wouldn't work?? So I then went and clicked to open the FSX folder and then found a setup application thing and selected Run as administrator and all installed correctly. But when I load up FSX I get this message saying The colour scheme has been changed to Windows 7 Basic a running programme isn't compatible with certain visual elements?Know I've loaded up FSX fine and it does work, does this mean I've installed it wrong? And do I need to install SP1 and SP2 for FSX because I couldn't download Service Pack 1 for some reason Secondly every program I install for FSX do I have to make sure I select Run As Administrator? I have also noticed it only mentions installing into Windows XP and Windows Vista but doesn't mention Windows 7?? As you can see I'm a little puzzled would appreciate any help or advice offeredThanksJason Jason Thompson
August 12, 201015 yr No that's normal.Best to turn off UAC.Running fsx will disable things like aero as they are not compatible. As soon as you exit fsx, your desktop will revert back to normal.IAN Ryzen 5800X3D, Nvidia RTX5080 - 32 Gig DDR4 RAM, 1TB & 2 TB NVME drives - Windows 11 64 bit MSFS 2024 Premium Deluxe Edition Resolution 2560 x 1440 (32 inch curved monitor)

As you can see I'm a little puzzled would appreciate any help or advice offeredThat message isn't a problem. Windows 7 (and Vista too) has something called 'Aero' which makes thing look nice and transparent and what not. FSX won't work when Aero is on, so it is automatically turned off when FSX starts. If you manually turn off Aero in Windows altogether, you won't get that message anymore. But it's certainly not something to worry about!Windows 7 isn't mentioned because it didn't exist when FSX was created and put on dvd's.You REALLY should install SP1 and SP2 because they both contain important updates which will make FSX perform a lot better!!! I have UAC off and never install anything as admin and never get into problems... Installing as admin certainly won't hurt, I guess. However I never install something into the default C:\Program Files (x86) folder, because that can give problems with rights etc. It's better to install stuff outside that folder (in any folder or on any drive you like).
August 12, 201015 yr Hi Jason,The comment about the colour scheme is fine, FSX isn't compatible with the standard Win 7 aero glass desktop so it automatically reverts to a basic colour scheme when FSX loads and switches back when you quit FSX .I would definitely install SP1 and SP2, a lot of add ons require them and they update the simulator with various bug fixes and tweaks. Alternatively you could find a copy of Acceleration, an add on pack which updates FSX and adds more scenery and aircraft.Win 7 has some issues with over enthusiastic file permission settings and restrictions. I install all my programs and run all my programs as "Run as Administrator", you can set them up that way so they do it automatically if you so wish.I have disabled WIn 7's UAC (user Account Control) also. I'm happy to do so and reasonably computer savvy to run with it off. It also can cause a lot of file permission and restriction problems that crop up when using FSX and it's associated add ons.Probably a bit late for you now, but I never install the program in it's default location, but mine is installed into C:/FSX , this again can bypass a lot of problems with file reading and writing that WIN 7 sometimes throws up.Using the above I have had no problems running FSX and a myriad of add ons . I run WIN 7 64bit for your information.hope the above helps,Steve

I would also install the latest DOTNET software and make sure the Microsoft Visuals C++ Redistributable libraries are installed as they are required to run applications developed with Visual C++ and many of the addon developers use them. You can also check out the excellent FSX setup guide at http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041.Best regards,Jim
October 19, 201114 yr HI I have just installed FSX into the default folder (program folder/X86.) I have not added anything else yet. Should I remove FSX and reinstall into C:FSX or any folder on C drive outside the program folder? I have UAC turned off. If I do remove and reinstall, should I run a registry cleaner before the reinstall to remove any left over registry files? Where should I look to remove any unwanted files after uninstalling FSX? Thanks, Iain WilloW (YMHB) flaps2approach.comB737-800 simulator

Thanks, IainThere is nothing to be gained by installing FSX onto another HD or another directory. Some people have indicated they have better performance and less crashes with FSX located in a folder other than the default. Maybe so. I have mine installed in the default. If you do uninstall FSX, you should only remove what's leftover in the default (Program Files/X86). When you install it in another HD or directory, the other file locations will NOT change. They will still be located in C:/Program Data/Microsoft/FSX; C:/Users/(User name)/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/FSX (a hidden folder); C:/Users/(User name)/AppData/Local/Microsoft/FSX (a hidden folder); C:/Users/(User Name)/My Documents/Flight Simulator X Files; and C:/Users/(User Name)/My Pictures/Flight Simulator X Files (if you had any pictures taken while flying). Most of those will be removed during the installation process but you might want to make sure. I agree with you, you should run a Registry Cleaner after uninstallation to make sure all entries relating to the location of FSX must be removed before reinstalling into another directory/HD. Also follow the guidelines as provided by NickN in his excellent guide on Setting Up FSX and Tuning It. I provided the link in my previous post here. It is also important that you start up FSX and run the default flight before installing SP1/SP2 or Acceleration. Hope this helps. Best regards,Jim
