Multiple Goarounds and Takeoff Problems

Featured Replies

Radar Contact usually works quite reliably. Today I did a flight from EGNT (Newcastle) to EGBE (Coventry) flying the Flight One 172R Cessna. I was parked in the general aviation area only seconds away from a runway hold located midway on the runway so that I could have taken off on either 07 or 25. I sat for quite awhile at the runway hold but received no direction to contact tower and no menu item to select for contacting the tower. I had to force a response by requesting the same runway that I had been assigned. From that point on everything worked ok until I was on final to runway 5 at Coventry. I could hear no other aircraft on final but was told to go around. I did so and again on final I was told to go around. I was running out of time so had to give up after the second go around. Any ideas on what might have caused the takeoff and go around situations?

Hi Watcher,These are the classic symptoms of RC4 not knowing precisely where you are. Have you rebuilt the database? If not them try that and see how you fare afterwards.

Before running the scenery rebuild be sure you have version 4.41 or better of makerwys from the links posted at the forum top. It solves several issues with scenery priorities especially with add-on scenery. The FS9 listing is for both versions.Regarding the go-arounds make sure that Interact With AI is enabled in RC options to prevent runway incursions. RC will also command a go-around if your gear is not down in time but the controller will provide an interesting response if that is the case :)

Thanks for the quick replies. I did recently rebuild the database after installing UK2000 VFR airfields but the MakeRunway exe is at the correct level. I have also checked and Interact with AI is enabled. I think that I flew the Newcastle to Coventry run since installing the UK2000 airfields and it was ok then. I'll run another test flight when I have enough time to keep going around and see how many times that happens. Regarding the gear, it is a fixed gear aircraft so that would not be a factor unless RC has become confused about whether that aircraft has a retractable gear. Interesting idea. It might be another week before I can get enought time to run the test.

I thought the R in 172R meant retractable gear as in 182R. I thought it was strange but you are correct using the reference here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna_172#VariantsNote there is a 172RG listed as a retractable. Also, when running the scenery rebuild, you are doing it from within RC, correct? Here's some things to briefly check:Go into your FS folder. Get the properties of r5.csv and r4.csv looking at the modification dates to insure the update occurred. Now go into your RC4\data folder and do the same property check for r4.csv and a4.csv. This will insure the files were copied and processed from the fs folder updating RC's database. One user had a dual FSX/FS9 setup. He used the incorrect RC folder (one for each FS version) to do the scenery rebuild, so if you have a dual installation check this. Also insure you put in the correct path to FS when the scenery rebuild starts. (I keep mine in a stored text file for copy/paste to avoid that lengthy path typing.)I looked at EGNT's airport and parking diagrams from UK AIS and it looks like the holding points for taxiways F and G are quite far back from the runway. If the scenery is true to this you might have to nudge a bit closer to the runway to get a release to get on it.You can elect to try it again with AI off just to insure there is no problem especially if you have AI loaded to do touch and gos.Coventry runway 23 looks like it has for larger aircraft a taxiway entry quite a bit down from the threshold. The threshold appears displaces as well so I wonder if AI were on the runway doing taxi backs as you approached. Here's the link I use for UK charts:http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/public/index.php%3Foption=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=6&Itemid=13.html with no registration required any more.

when you did the rebuild, did you do it from within RC, by pressing the rebuild button?also, if windows 7, i'm sure you're already doing this, but you have to run rc as adminhover over the makerwys.exe in the root directory of FS, and make sure the version number is correctwe may have to dig into the runways.txt file and see what is happening to the airports in the scenery files. make sure the priority of the add-on scenery is higher (or is it lower?) than the default scenery.

I am addressing some of the questions raised and suggestions given by JD and Ronzie. First off, my system is XP at SP3 level and I run under an Administrator account. I only have an FSX installation. I have checked r5.csv and r4.csv in the FS folder and r4.csv and a4.csv in my RC4 data folder and they all have the correct date when the DB rebuild was done after installing the UK2000 Airfield Scenery. I did do the rebuild from within RC by pressing the rebuild button. I have also reverified that the makerwys.exe is at the 4.4.1.0 level. I have also verified that Interact With AI is checked. I looked into the runways .txt file and found three entries fir Coventry. Working down from the top is the default scenery, then the Just Flight Traffix X, then the UK2000 Airfields. I am assuming that the lowest down is higher. I'll have to relook at Traffix X to see how it is set up. I will run another flight to Coventry, this time nudging a little closeer to the line. I think that I have addressed all the questions.

Look at the file path for the afd file that Traffic X put in there. I'd then rename that file extension. In this case I think you'd only want the UK2K equivalent file in there. This insures that the UK scenery matches the facilities map that it uses and is not confused by the Traffic X utilities. Normally the Traffix X facilities are mapped to the default scenery facility locations. If RC's runway and other data is from Traffic X then it will be out of sync with the geometry of the UK2K design. Before you rename the Traffic X file you might wish to access with an FSX airport editor equivalent to FS9's AFCAD. The free ADE9X can do this getting the airline parking codes for each gate. If UK2K afd type file has this as you desire then there is no concern. If you wish to add codes to the UK2K version ADE9X should be able to do this. The facilities editor in ADE9X is similar in operation to AFCAD for FS9. It is located here:http://www.scruffyduck.org.uk/filemanager/navega.php?id=2&PHPSESSID=49327b2f9580e3c42e5316a17779bfd7along with tutorials. After either renaming, editing, or both the afd files run FSX so it redoes its scenery index. Shut it down and run from within RC the scenery rebuild. As an FS9 user with Ultimate Traffic, every time I install an airport scenery I insure I move out the afcad type file placed by UT.

I coud not find an AFD file anywhere that relates to Traffic X. I have done some more testing and find that nudging up closer to the line solves the problem of not getting the menu item to contact the tower. I flew two more flights to Coventry, one landing at runway 23 and the other at runway 05. Both flights worked fine. At this point I have to consider that the two successive go arounds were likely related in some way to the AI aircraft. I do thank everyone for their help. If I get a repeat of the go arounds I'll try to stick with it and see how many I get.

Here's a way to see what scenery afd type file has priority in the RC database. The last time you ran a scenery rebuild a file called runways.txt was created or overwritten in your FS folder. This is a log of the scenery processing performed by the makerwys element in FS called up by rc to create the basic files RC processes into its data folder. For each default scenery I think there is just one section. Each instance of an add-on scenery will have two sections, one for deletions and one for additions. open this file up in Word or notepad. It will take quite a while to load. Do a search by ICAO code for each section. You should see the default, then two sections (a pair) for each occurrence of an add-on airport including any specific afd files separate from add-ons. The last two adjacent sections take priority. The first deletes (in the database) previous entries and the second adds in what is needed. The order of priority is governed by your scenery.cfg which gets reindexed every time you start FS after a change you made in scenery. The first or second line gives the path to the afd type file used. Note that there may be nothing in the file title that is of that type. In this case you should see two section pairs each for EGNT and EGBE with paths pointing to the installation of this UK2K scenery folder. If another section pair shows up for those airports after this one then your add-on scenery folder for these UK2K products is not at the proper priority.

I have found the files for the defult scenery, the traffic X scenery and the UK2000 scenery in the runways.txt file. What is strange is that all three show an additional runway pair rwy 17 an 35. However, every chart I have looked at shows only the 5 and 24 pair and the gress strip 6 and 24. This includes the SimPlatesX and the NATS charts for EGBE. I wonder of it was AI aircraft heading for 17 or 35 that was causing the problem. At themoment I am not able to edit the bgl files. I have ADE installed but have not yet installed the FSX SDK.

17/35 shows in the NATS chart as a taxiway and looks like it is now closed. 6/24 is a helipad. It will not make it into the RC database as it is too short. There is a built in filter in makerwys that excludes runways under a certain length. This is to eliminate the pseudo runways used in the "STAR" or "Crosswind" runway technique to get around the restrictions of FS in requiring almost parallel runways to have multiple active runways.First rename the Traffic X file extension indicated as discussed to disable it, then go into the file indicated with the UK2000 path with ADE9X and change its properties to a concrete taxiway. After the changes start FS so it reindexes then stop it and rerun the RC scenery rebuild. You do not need the FSX SDK to use ADE to my knowledge unless it requires the xmlbgl compiler that may be available elsewhere. I use it strictly for FS9 and don't recall if I had to get it from the FSX SDK. I do have it I think from the FS9 SDK - I'll have to check the install instructions. It may be available separately somewhere.Wikipedia only shows 5/23 plus the helipad as active runways.
